Static IP Issues
We have two identical Dell XPS laptops in our office . Both with Windows 7 Home Premium on . Our ISP has static ip numbers for each user . Access is through a LAN with dns and gateway. Initially both computers were set up and functioned perfectly . Then
one just stopped accessing the net and came up with a "no internet connection " and the eclamation mark . I took this computer and plugged it into someone elses network , DHCP , the network card works perfectly without a problem . We are now reduced to using
the cell network to retrieve e mails on that computer. Then the other computer started doing the same thing but a quick restore to a restore point the day before fixed the problem.
Any ideas ? I have tried removing disabling the card , tried different user IP numbers , taken the client 's off and put them back on again , tried restore initially that didn't work.
I then tried putting the same IP on the computer as another that was active on the net and it pops up with the error another user with the same IP . But no internet acess at all. So stuck with using the cell phone network via usb at the moment.

Hi Alan Sutton 7,
Thanks for the post!
Run CMD as administrator, input ipconfig, what’s the result? Comparing it with a working computer.
Based on your description, I recommend you run the following command:
Ipconfig /flushDNS
Ipconfig /registerDNS
Check if it works.

Many thanks for the reply. I tried what you said . Under ipconfig on the computer that is not working it says autoconfig Ipv4 169.254.19.23 . Nothing else On the adaptor settings/properties all the correct settings are there and I have taken them out and
put them in but they are still not there under ipconfig Ran Ipconfig /registerDNS and it says that it will put up records in 15 minutes on the event window On the one that is working it has all the correct details.Alan Sutton 7

I am getting inconsistant results when I run ipconfig /all On the computer that is not working everytime you switch the computer off the Default Gateway settings dissapear from the adapter and from ipconfig . You can put them back in and they are reflected
under ipconfig .As soon as you turn it off they dissapear. Sometimes the static ip assigned to the user is there and sometimes it is not under ipconfig . Additionaly the Subnet mask setting under ip config is 255.255.0.0 whereas it is set as 255.255.255.240
under the adapter. No matter what I do it does not change to the correct setting under ipconfig. Any ideas ? Certainly some corruption somewhere but as to the easiest way of fixing it I am not sure . Cannot ping the computers ip , it times out . Adaptor works
fine under DHCP .It is not a cable or modem problem as the other identical computer works on the same cables.Alan Sutton 7

Solved this problem.
I have on innumerable occasions removed the network card and set it up again from scratch and still the settings under ip config would not match the adaptor settings . On the last occasion I removed the network card and the wireless network card and
reset the network card up again.
Worked instantly. So seems to be file corruption of some sort . Hard to say exactly whether it was windows or the wireless card driver . FYI the wireless card has never been used .
