Strange Problem With Website Addressing
Windows 7 Ultimate X64
IE 8
Microsoft Security Essentials
I have a number of Windows 7 machines on a LAN. On one of them IE8 behaves a bit strange. I have a website
www.saberman.com. If I type saberman.com into the URL box in IE8 it takes me to my website. If I type
www.saberman.com I briefly see the url
http://urlspy.co.uk/www.saberman.com and then wind up at
http://urlmetrics.co.uk/removed/
I have used tools\options\delete to delete everything but I still get the same results. I have run some virus/malware detectors with no results. I checked the hosts file and it does not have anything defined -- just comments.
I checked tools\options\connections\LAN settings and it is set to automatically detect settings -- no proxy defined.
I have disabled all non Microsoft addons.
The only utl address that exhibits this behavior is
www.saberman.com. Any other website gets resolved properly whether I use just the domain or
www.domain.
Openning a command window and do a tracert for saberman.com and
www.saberman.com yields the exact same set of ip addresses.
The only subst defined is for H:\.
The other machines on the LAN do not have this problem.
What is going on?

Found the problem. Somehow -- and I don't know how -- an internet shortcut was added to my Favorites folder with the name
www.saberman.com and with the URL:
http://urlspy.co.uk/www.saberman.com
Appearently, IE8 searches your Favorites for a match and, if found, uses it instead of just doing a dns lookup on what you entered in the URL textbox.http://www.saberman.com
