Yes, you should be able to?
This is a general answer - not just for Surface Pro:
In case of Windows 8.1 - I do not know whether Microsoft did a more hardware independent implementation than Intel (WiDi 4 supported Miracast) ... but I can not see why Microsoft should restrict to only Intel components for general Play/PlayTo support
in Windows 8.1. I.e. we just need a Wi-Fi Direct connection to carry the Miracast "signal".
So does Surface Pro or any other Win8.1 capable computer with Wireless LAN support Miracast? Guess so. Try it out.
1) Try turning on your Mirascast device, i.e. your remote display, smart blu-ray player, Miracast adapter etc.
2) Goto PC Settings > PC & Devices > Devices > Add a device (You can also go to Control Panel > Printer and Devices - and add it from here ... PC Settings seems better though ... more qualified info)
3) Your Miracast device should show by some name and as a type of Digitial Media Render, probably also stated as uncertified by Microsoft. Add it to your devices.
4) The Miracast device now registers under a (new) group "Play devices" in PC Settings > PC & Devices > Devices
5) Explorer > folder > video file > PlayTo > Your Miracast Device (note you can queue videos)
6) The video feed appears on the remote display. The picture of the video queue should appear on the display associated with the Digital Media Render (i.e. Miracast).
7) You can try a WinRT app. I.e. Video-minder og some other video app. Hit Win+K > Devices > Play > Your Miracast Device In my case Play(To) did not work in WinRT yet. A temporary bug during preview of 8.1 I guess.
Regarding the Intel WiDi to Miracast legacy:
From a hardware point of view ... since Intel has adopted Miracast for WiDi 4 ... you need an Intel Integrated solution. Because your machine is Surface Pro - components are modern, i.e. new CPU, chipset and so on.
For Miracast-compatibility in Intel-based (WiDi) systems you need an Intel CPU, Chipset and an Intel WiFi chip.

Miracast is working on the surface pro. I connected mine to the Netgear PTV3000 this evening without a problem. Just go to the display settings and add a wireless display. Enter the provided PIN and you are off and running.
We have tried every which way from Sunday to get the Surface Pro to work with the Netgear PTV3000. It asks for the PIN. We put it in and then the screen flickers and fails.
Any Suggestions?
Same problem here - I wonder what the problem is? I feel like I'm using the same device and hardware, but it's just not working... aie...
Yes, we upgraded to the latest firmware, that was the first thing.
Exact same problem here. Unable to stream anything so far.
I don't know about the others, but I get to the "insert pin", and it connects.
After that the PTV3000 will tell me it is trying to connect. After a while, it will disconnect.
Turning off Windows firewall did NOT help.

I've got a problem with an LG 50LA6230 and 8.1 on the Surface using Miracast. I can pair to the display perfectly but as soon as I disconnect and try and re-connect it fails and says that "The pairing information has been lost, add/remove device" in Windows 8.1.
Any ideas what causes this, do you think it's 8.1 related or an issue with the device I'm trying to pair with?
Wynn
I worked on it last week for about three hours. There is an upgraded firmware with the ability to turn on debugging. After doing that, when I attempt to connect and it fails, the TV shows: Wifi connection closed
That's it. wow, great debugging option!
I will re-read your suggestion and see if I can make it work.
You'll need the Intel Windows 8.1 Preview Beta Graphics Driver http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-21232
I have it working with a NetGear PTV3000 with 2.4.3 firmware http://support.netgear.com/product/PTV3000

Hi there,
I tried to make it work from 2 days and I just successfull.
To do it I :
Upgrade the PTV3000 to the last version 2.4.3
Install the beta version of the Intel HD Grahics 4000
Install last drivers of the wifi adaptor (Marvell AVASTAR 350N)
After one fail, I just retry to connect the PTV3000 after reboot it and TADAAA it works very well.
It work in HD mode in a Extension and duplicated desktop in 1920 x 1080.
It a real plaesure to have it.
