For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, if you are willingto pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, I recommend one of thefollowing three: AviraAvastMicrosoft Security Essentials You also need anti-spyware software. I recommend that you download andinstall (both freeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware *and*SuperAntiSpyware. Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP

That is much better than nothing. However, the Win XP firewall does not monitor outbound traffic from your computer - and cannot deny Internet access to unknown or malicious software. There are various options and although I cannot advise upon the merits (or otherwise) of individual programs, I have installed the free version of Zone Alarm, which does a lot more than the Win XP firewall - and seems to work OK.

Although I used to use and recommend Zone Alarm because of its outwardprotection, I've more recently become convinced that outward protection is an illusion. Once one of the nasties gets into your computer, it can essentially do whatever it wants, including circumventing the firewall. So the extra protection provided by afirewall that monitors outbound traffic is more apparent than real. So I think the Windows firewall is just fine, and there's no need touse a third-party one. MSE did replace ONE CARE. And its quite amazing. I prefer it over AVIRA and AVAST. eSET has always slowed me down. If you want to buy an AV the top 2 areKASPERSKI and GDATA . I wouldn't pay for any other. But MSE Free is better to me. Also Kasperski and Gdata's rescue CD's are free and work pretty good. They are bootable AV disks that scan in there own little linux GUI and even update the definitions through the ethernet. The reason I think MSE is big is because when someone gets hit with something, what did they most likely do first? As we see they come and complain to Microsoft first. SO that is why I see for myself that MSE detects almost everything. In my use of AVAST, Avast is the best preventive as its amazing network protection and internet detection rate is, But it is not to good at removing them when something gets by. MSE removes them with almost no issues. Just my 2 Cents."There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand binary, and those that don't." [_1337_Pete_]

Zonealarm is the top free 3rd party firewall. It does however have some issues in win7 with games,(had a game that would not load with ZA installed) but this is the XP forum so I would get it."There are only 10 types of people in the world.
