Taskbar Icons Not Appearing (and SSDP Discovery Service)
I am experiencing what appears to be a rather odd network-related issue.Upon logging in (usually as a 2nd user via fast user switching, but not always), the usual speaker/volume, network and power/battery icons do not appear in the task bar and the start menu is unresponsive. Logging out and logging back in again resolves the problem.Investigation captured at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/841571/and http://winhlp.com/node/16suggest that such behaviour is as a result of an interaction with the SSDP Discovery Service. The suggested resolution described in the KB article (to disable the service) is inappropriate as I want to continue to share my media library across my home network.Does anyone know if any work has been done in Windows 7 to resolve what appears to be a long-standing issue?

If you avoid fast user switching does this ever happen?

Yes, but much, much less frequently.I rely on fast user switching as the PC is shared amongst the household.
