The Great XP/Win7 Networking Mystery (a good one!)
Hello all. Here's the issue - what did I miss???? Network: 2 XP machines on LAN via Ethernet 1 XP laptop on LAN via WIFI 1 Vista Home Machine via WIFI 1 W7 laptop (new) via WIFI (tested ethernet too) - this machine is just out of the bubble wrap. DLINK D-655 Router All machines in same Workgroup Behavior: Windows XP desktop machines appear in W7 full network map. Right click functionality doesn't work. Windows XP laptop appears in W7 full network map at bottom ("cannot be placed on map") and right click functionality WORKS . W7 machine can ping any machine, including XP machines Rollover gives IP4/MAC information for all machines (XP,Vista, XP) Vista machine and W7 shows in network map , right click functionality works. Map Network Drive with \\desktopmachinename\share syntax gives "Invalid Network Path" error. Map Network Drive with \\laptopmachinename\share syntax opens shares. XP machines can share fluidly between themselves. XP Test Machine Setup: SP3, LLTD running. Browser, Workstation, Server services running. Simple Fire Sharing enabled (tested off too) Norton 360 firewall on XP desktop enabled (tested off too) Norton 360 firewall on on Laptop Windows Firewall on XP desktops and laptop off (tested on too) My XP file shares all end with $ to prevent some net stumbling risks. W7 Setup: W7 Network Discovery ON, File Print Sharing On, Public Sharing On, Use user accounts ON W7 Firewall enabled (tested off too) Misc stuff I've tried: DLINK 655 Router rebooted. DLINK 655 Router w/o WAN connected tried. WIFI / Ethernet configuration for W7 machine tried. I appreciate your attention and ideas. I feel relatively savvy with networks/PCs, but this has me pulling my hair out. Scott

win 7 is a more secure OS, some networks need it to be dumbed down.In the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try Enable network discoveryTurn on file and print sharingTurn off password protected sharingTurn on Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers The other settings such as encryption I have set as use 128 bit encryption, you may need to go lower. for pro are better Please check related policies. 1. Enter “gpedit.msc” in the Start Search box. 2. Open “Computer Configuration”/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translationNetwork access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and SharesNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accountsNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares Change the following policy:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Change the value to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”. If the issue persists, change the Kerberos encryption type. 1. Open gpedit.msc. 2. Find the policy Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options ->Network Security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos 3. Configure the policy. If it is not configured, actually both DES cipher suites are disabled. I suggest that you enable all the suits.for Home versions....ou may follow the steps to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. 1. Launch regedit from Start Search box.2. Find the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa 3. Create a DWORD key under Lsa and set: Name: LmCompatibilityLevel Value: 1 4. Restart.

How do you turn off password protected sharing? I don't see an option for it?

Thanks... those changes solved the problem. Not sure about which one, but there was no need to go to the Kerberos step. Thanks for taking the time. Let me send you a SBUX card - email me your mail address. Scott BuzzMaven Labs
