The undiscovered Laptop prevents my file sharing.
I recently purchased a new desktop PC. It was supposed to be set up that I could network the old desktop and move my documents via LAN to the new desktop but it could not open the shared folders. My laptop however could so I temporarily stored the data there.
At that time I had no issues regarding file transfer between laptop and new desktop. Now since the purchase my desktop crashed due to ( some update error on Kaspersky Pure which corrupted the 'blacklist' but seemed to be running ok after uninstalling and reinstalling
the AV software). So now I want to have to transfer files between new desktop and my laptop
My laptop is a sony viao running vista 64 bit OS and my desktop is a gateway running windows 7 home premium. Using a private network on wireless n router.
I can't seem to get the gateway to discover my C: drive although the laptop is set up to share it. The gateway does discover the sony viao media content from laptop.
Tried setting up an adhoc since I was getting nowhere with the on the private network. The desktop can't seem to read or discover the laptop on that either. Love some help.
Also how does one set up non homegroup password protection on the windows 7 OS(- this is obviously not just the logon password for user profile as I have tried)for file sharing between between the 2 systems as the laptop running vista can see the desktop
but cannot access the folders regardless of password protection being set to on or off on the desktop. Its too bad the folder sharing wasn't as easy as the media sharing.

Hi,
Please confirm if you turn on the files and printer sharing , you can go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network
and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings to check your setting. Home Group password is to protect your computer form infringe, I think It’s best to keep it.
And you could refer to the following links about file sharing:

Hope it helps.

Hi,
Your trouble shooting tips helped me discover that the actual problem was with Kaspersky Pure's firewall network settings ( I had installed on both computers recently). The firewall had my private network set to public. oNCE I changed the status on both
the desktop and laptop I had no problems finding the drives
Thanks for the tips
