Total freeze on Windows startup
Hi there, I am running W7 64 Ultimate, and I have been getting a freeze every time I boot up from 0-3 mins after boot up. boot up in Safe mode, absolutely fine. Try a clean boot and still no dice, after disabling all but MS services in MSconfig, So no startup items and no services except the MS ones. I am stumped. Have looked in Event log and the only thing that jumps out is a bad sector on disk 3 (my external back up drive). Can anybody point me in the right direction, have been running this W7 install for a good month or so now with no problems, its just started doing this literally today. This is bugging the ____ out of me am just in the middle of updating my mb drivers and such. But all my security services have been turned off (bitdefender, windows defender, windows security centre). So I am loath to connect up to the net on that machine. Any ideas? I thought possibly virus as it was all my security services that were switched off Booted it completely clean (device and services) and it was ok, until I opened an app. I tried two apps IE8 and FL Studio 9.5, my studio software and upon opening it froze. It was sat there quite happily for 5 mins idling, but as soon as I increased the load it froze. This is bugging the ____ out of me am just in the middle of making my mb drivers and such. But all my security services have been turned off (bitdefender, windows defender, windows security centre). So I am loath to connect up to the net on that machine. Any ideas? looks that you are right, it could be a virus. It could also be anything else. So lets Isolate first the posibility of a virus. logon to safemode with networking Download, install and scan using Malwarebytes Anti Malware also scan with prevX3.0 . (prevX is a free scanner but removal is for a fee. If you have results in prevX you may proceed to either purchase the license or manually remove the infected files or registry). If you can find notable event logs in event viewer please paste it here too. Once your computer comes clean, try booting to normal mode again. CESabarre Free Tech Support through Email.

Here's a few random entries from my log files that are usually aound the time of crash. Unfortunately for some reason there is no memory dump happening, so I can't post a dump file to examine (it is set up though). malwarebytes has come back clean, so I guess it has to be hardware/software related. Incidentally, this is a dual boot system (7/XP) and the same happened when I booted into XP yesterday. Tried it a couple of times and it was exactly the same behaviour. I have clean booted, both device and services/software and its the same as well. I reckon its just a process of elimination now then.

"MalwareBytes" is the name of a company, not a software product. I assume that you mean MalwareBytes AntiMalware. Good as it is, neither it, nor any other such program, is perfect. Although it strongly suggest that it is unlikely that you are infected with malware, it does *not* mean that it "has to be hardware/software related." > Incidentally, this is a dual boot system (7/XP) and the same happened when I booted into XP yesterday. Cesabarre, I have done all those things and uninstalled BitDefender, but still no difference. I just ran statup repair and it gave the following error message: Root cause found: Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem. Repair action: Sytem files integrity check and repair. Result: Failed - Error code=0x490 Time taken=459688ms But why would XP be affected by a W7 system files problem? For me its still hardware, as per Kens reply. So where do we go from here then?

your system runs fine in safemode you mentioned, that should be enough to assume hw is fine. However it won't be bad to run hardware diagnostics, but that would go out of the scope of this forum here (?) . Do you think it could possibly be a driver/shared driver issue? A friend of mine mentioned that that could be the case. Also, I have saved the event files off, but is there a way to u/l them to the technet? Thanks Paul Also , would it be a good idea to run the W7 recovery disk, because of the previous error message (0x490)?

Was it before you have this issue? ----- Sorry for late reply. Lets go to safemode 1. In msconfig set it to Normal Startup 2. In Services.msc set the following to Manual Application Management Bonjour Service Certificate Propagation FLEXnet Licensing Service FLEXnet Licensing Service 64 IP Helper iPod Service Netlogon NVIDIA Display Driver Service PC Tools Startup and Shutdown Monitor service TrueVector Internet Monitor Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service 3. Clear all logs in the Event Viewer 4. In the command prompt (with elevated level) type in sfc /scannow and let it scan your computer. 5. Restart back to Normal Mode. If it freezes again go back to Event Viewer, arrange the logs according to priority and watch out for the ones in red. Hi, After checking this issue, I suggest you can try to check the result by taking the following steps: 1. Check Device Clean Boot 1). Click "Start", type "DEVMGMT.MSC" in the Search textbox and press Enter. 2). Expand "Sound, video and game controllers". 3). Right click on your Sound Card, select "Properties" 4). Click "Driver" tab, click Disable (Disable the selected device). Click OK 5). Please use the same method to disable other hardware such as: Modem, network card, CD-R drive. Please note some devices such as video adapter are not available to be disabled. 6). Please restart the computer. Check the result. 2. Check Disk If the issue persists, as for this high system freezing\application hang issue, we generally need to analyze the performance monitor logs and memory dump files to locate the root cause. Unfortunately, debugging is beyond what we can do in the forum because of the nature of forum support. A support call to our product service team is needed for the debugging service. I'd like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this problem can be resolved efficiently. How did you know it was the graphics card? Did you fix it by accident or was there some diagnostic evidence? I'm having the same error - windows 7 just locks up and I have to hard-boot. I had been experiencing random freezes for almost 3 months without any solutions. I formatted my drive and reinstalled the OS, after some time it starts freezing all over again. My system config is i7 920 processor 6gb RAM DDR3 2X 7200 rpm drives (1 TB and 1.5 TB), OS is installed on 1 TB drive. 600 watts PS XFX 5770 graphics card Asus p6TD v2 Motherboard.

To see the cause I have to take a look at the dumps with the Debugging Tools for Windows. Please start the Windows Explorer and go to the folder C:\Windows\Minidump. Next, copy the dmp files to your desktop, zip all dmp into 1 zip file and upload the zip file to your public Skydrive [1] folder and post a link here.
