Troubleshooting cached credentials in Windows 7
We are experiencing an issue where users in our pilot group for WIndows 7 are no longer able to logon using cached credentials. They will logon ok at the office, take their computer home and be unable to logon. We are still mostly WIndows XP and I have
not seen this issue with our xp computers.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions for troubleshooting?
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums.
As I understand that the user profile isn’t cached on Windows 7 machines, you can’t logon the computer while out of office. To troubleshoot this kind of
issue, I would like to suggest:
1.
Check if the logon caching is turned off on Windows 7 machines:
1)
Click Start, type:
regedit in the Start Search box.
2)
Open Registry Editor and find the ValueName of
CachedLogonsCount under the following path, ensure the value isn’t set 0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
If the
CachedLogonsCount has a value of 0, set the value as 0 to 50. By default,
Windows remember 10 cached logons.
2.
Check if there is a GPO associated with Windows 7 machines to perform the behavior of deleting cached copies of roaming profiles. The Group Policy setting is located:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\User Profiles\Delete cached copies of roaming profiles
If you enable it, please disable to test the problem.
3.
Manually delete the domain profile to create a new copy:
1)
Go to the Users folder:
%systemdrive%\Users and delete the domain profile.
2)
Open Registry Editor and find the following entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\
3)
Delete the domain profile according to the user’s GUID.
4)
Restart the computer and logon.
Note: you should delete the
domain profile at office, the next time you logon to the domain, the roaming profile will be copied to the local computer.
Best Regards

Thanks Dale,
Cached logons is set to 2. This was not changed from default.
No GPOs associated with roaming profiles as we do not use them in our organization. All profiles are local.
Users on WIndows7 will be able to log in to their laptop using cached credentials then one day will not be able to. In troubleshooting we had a user logon with a local account, do a runas for their domain account , then they were able to logon as normal
thanks

Please change the CachedLogonsCount to 10 and see if it works.
