UAC admin rights causes Start menu / Desktop shortcut problems
Hi, sorry about the wierd title, I'm not sure how to describe this in a short sentence :-) I haven't been able to find a specific answer to this question and I assume it's something quite simple. I'm using the Windows 7 RC. When I am logged in using an admin account on Windows 7, and I install an app, let's say Spotify using the .exe, UAC pops up and asks me to confirm that I want to do this. I click 'Continue' and the app installs fine and the Start menu shortcuts and desktop shortcut is created just fine *in that account*. However, if I am logged in as a normal user and try to install Spotify, again using the exact same .exe file, UAC pops up and asks me to enter the password for the admin user. Once I do that, it installs fine, BUT it creates the Start menu shortcuts and Desktop shortcut for the 'admin' user, NOT my user! I have to then manually go into Program Files and find the program and create the shortcuts myself. I have read other forum posts and tried adjusting UAC settings but nothing has worked so far. I hope someone else has run into this before and knows the answer. Thanks.

Does the issue occur with all programs, or just individual programs? On our computers, we have installed Microsoft Office and other Microsoft programs, the issue does not occur. When installing these programs, it will create Start menu shortcuts for all users. If issue only occurs with individual programs, it can be a compatibility issue. Can you choose to install the program for all users?Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thanks for replying. I happens on some programs only. Programs which give the option of "Install for All users" work fine, but many other programs that don't have this option and just do their "default" thing, whatever that may be, end up putting the shortcuts in the admin account. Some programs that I've had to manually create shortcuts for are: Password Safe and VLC media player. I've now noticed that I've installed several other programs where this does not happen, so it could be a compatibility issue as you say...
