UAC elevated software needs to open a file TWICE. Very hard on limited network connections
Can Microsoft do something about this? When I ask clients to install software from a remote server, they first doubleclick on a 500MB setup.exe Then it gets downloaded for 2 hours. Then Windows 7 asks for elevated permission and you have to re-download the whole thing! Can't this be cached or similar? I cannot create local installations for all branch offices!

You have to create a new entry EnableLinkedConnections (as DWORD) under: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion\Policies\System and set it to 1 . André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi, ok. Is it possible that you temporarily copy the setup to the client, run it and delete it after installation? Have you also tried offline files? Maybe the offline file feature copies the file only once to the client. I haven't tried this. Could you please try it? thanks. i guess there are many options and workarounds. but in the end these create a problem since they are indeed temporary. i would like somebody from MSFT to comment on this and why this is by design.

This behavior is caused by UAC, but it is not a designed behavior of UAC. Not every program installation will encounter this kind of issues. It is caused by the design of the installation programs that are not compatible with UAC. For example if you install a Windows 7 compatible program such as Windows Live Messenger or Microsoft Office, this issue will not occur. We need to wait for the program publishers to upgrade their productions. Arthur Xie - MSFT
