Unable to access network shared folders
I am running "Windows7 Enterprise N" 64 bit version. For last few months, I am facing problem in accessing network shares. Typing the following on "Run" fails with message "Network path not found".
\\computername
Pinging the other computer works well. And the other computer can access my network share. \\mycomputername from the other system works well. All the other users in my domain can access "\\computername". So it is something to do with the settings
that I have.
I am wondering why this is failing and how I can solve this? Any help would be appreciated.*Mark the best reply as "Answered"

Essentially the same problem: Internet always works but sharing from the Win 7 laptop cannot share/
My problem is with a Window 7 Dell Vostro Laptop using Win 7 Home Premium and successfully connected to a D Link DIR-655 Router for almost 9 months before the router failed. It was replaced with a Netgear N300 Router and will connect to the internet
every time but will not share files with my other network machines. The other machines are a Dell Inspiron 530 using Win Vista and another Dell Dimension 8200 using XP SP3. The Vista and XP Desktops can see each other and the Win 7 Laptop and share
files but it will not work the other way around. I have called Dell and Netgear and they tell me it's a Win 7 problem. The Netgear tech had me ping the machines from the desktops and they all pinged with no problem.
Please hlp me to find the solution so I can use my laptop on my network remotely.
Thanks,
Nick

Hey :)
Are you in a domain? (must be with enterprise edition)
If you are, then the administrator might have disabled the run box for security issues.
Simply typing in \\computername will force the error message to pop-up :) just to clarify.

I don't follow. I am the administrator but I don't follow what is disabled? Also, where do I type
in the computer name?Nick Arena

Hi,
You may ping the computer name for a test.
If you can not ping them, it indicates that you encounter an issue related to NETBIOS name resolved.
Perhaps, the firewall block the outbound NetBIOS protocol so that happened. Please try to disable the firewall to have a test. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. What are U using for file sharing:
40 – 56 – bit encryption? Or 128 –bit?

When the Netgear tech was here, the first thing he checked all three computers from the desktops and the laptop
and pinged all three to show the router was connecting all three. He also checked and the only Firewalls were the
Windows Firewall and allowing the connection. All Firewalls were turned off as well and tested both on and off. As I said,
we were using a D Link router on the same network previously and had no connectivity or file share issues with the
laptop. Nick Arena

Hi,
As zen_zen says, have you tried to change the encryption setting to 40-56 bit for a test.
Also, please ping each other with NetBIOS name to see whether the IP returned.
Thanks.

Hi,
OK, because you can ping the remote computers, but can not use the NetBIOS name to access then remote computer.
So I suspect the NetBIOS resolving could be the root cause, please keep monitoring and post more detail if you have any update.
