Unable to change network location on windows 7.
Currently my active network is set to Work Network, when I click work network, which is blue and highlights as a link, nothing happens. I have also attempted to click on Set up a new connection or network under change your networking settings and once again,
nothing happens. Using a LAN connection. Also, don't know if this helps, when I click on see full map it thinks for a few minutes then Windows Explorer locks up and needs to restart, which usually doesn't work and I have to restart the machine.
I bought the computer brand new, first owner, and I have had this problem since I bought it about a year and a half ago.

Try un-installing the NIC from Device Manager (don't delete the driver files), disconnect the network cable, and restart the PC. It should re-install the NIC, and when you plug your your network cable back in, it should ask your for your network
location.

Uninstalled device, did not delete drivers, removed cables, and restarted the PC. After the restart the device did reinstall, however once I plugged the network cable back in it used the existing profile for the network. Still a work network.

As a matter of interest, what network location do you want? Are the Work firewall settings causing you problems?

You should be able to change your location to Public with this Powershell script:
# Get network connections
$networkListManager = [Activator]::CreateInstance([Type]::GetTypeFromCLSID([Guid]"{DCB00C01-570F-4A9B-8D69-199FDBA5723B}"))
$connections = $networkListManager.GetNetworkConnections()
# Set network location to Public for all networks
$connections | % {$_.GetNetwork().SetCategory(0)}
You will need to run this in an elevated Powershell environment.

If explorer.exe crashes frequently, set the option "start own process
for file window" (or how that is called in the English locale - as I
have no English version up at the moment that's the back translation of
the German setting) under Organize/File and Search options/Display .
That way if one explorer windows crashes you just kill that window and
don't need to kill explorer and afterward restart it via task-manager.
BTW if you are unable to change network settings - are you logged on as
an administrative user? If not logon as Administrator or member of the
Administrators group and try to change settings.
And further if you want to control network settings detailed and
exchange data with different computers running different OSs the work
network is the setting of choice. So I wouldn't try to get away from
the work network but instead try to adapt settings to your needs.
