Unable to reconnect to network after standby on laptop
Hi, Probably an easy answer to this but we've not figured it yet. Both myself and my colleague have the same problem on vista; when we connect to the office network everything works fine, however, if we standby our laptop and take it home to use on our wireless networks, it works fine at home but when we return to the office (again on standby) it won't allow applications (inc. web browsing) to work on the network until we disable the network device then re-enable it. The network appears to be connected correctly and an IP address is issued etcbut nothing will run over the network. Any ideas? the work-a-round of disabling and enabling works but it's a pain having to do it each time. Thanks

Hello WBSKC, There is a similar issue where the default gateway is lost after you wake a Vista computer from sleep. If you haven't already, please obtain the latest service pack for Windows Vista. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872 -- Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Thanks Eric, I downloaded the update but it said it doesn't apply to my system, I assume it has been applied through automatic windows updates. Kevin

Hi, I would like to confirm whether you are using wireless connection in the office network as well. In addition, I suggest checking the following: 1. When the issue occurs, type the commands ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew. Is the issue resolved? 2. Clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box for the network adapter to check the result. Here are the steps:1) Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button, typing ncpa.cpl in the Start Search box, and pressing Enter.2) Right-click the connection, and then click Properties.3) On the Networking tab, click Configure.4) On the Power Management tab, clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK. 3. In addition, if SP1 has not been installed on the Windows Vista, I suggest installing Windows Vista SP1 to fix the related known issues. Hope it helps.

Hi Jason, Thanks for your suggestions: ipconfig - when I typed in the commands at the comman prompt I get "the requested operation requires elevation" - I then tried the renew command anyway and got "and error occured while...opration cancelled". I checked the power settings on the network devices (lan card and wireless adaptor) an neither had the "allow computer to turn off power..." set on them. I have SP1 installed. Any further suggestion? Cheers Kevin

Hi, Please open the Command Prompt with elevated token to run the command ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew: 1. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box. 2. Right click the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator. 3. Then type the commands. If there is any error, please let me know what error message is displayed. In regards to the settings in the power tab of the network adapter, do you mean the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box does not exist in the power tab? Could you capture the screenshot for me? What is the model of the network card on the Windows Vista machine? Additionally, please install the latest driver for the network card to check if the issue will disappear.
