Unable to view XP computer on Vista and a few other networking questions
Good morningI have been trying to get my network set up over the last couple of days with no success. The details of the network are as follows:Main computer is running XP professional SP3 and has the printer and router connected to it. I also have a laptop running Vista business which connects wirelessly to the router. I am able to ping the desktop from the laptop but not vice versa. Both computers have the same subnet and default gateway address. In reading some troubleshooting it was advised to run the microsoft hotfix to install the LLTD responder on the xp machine which I did. I can see the files in the subfolders, however when I run services.msc the program is not listed for me to start. Both the desktop and the laptop are in the same workgroup. Before installing the hotfix I was able to see the laptop in the network on the desktop however now I cant. I have also noticed that even though I have the LLTD on my laptop set up to start automatically it isnt doing so. In fact it seems to stop automatically and i have to restart the service.I am also trying to set up printer sharing so that I can print from both my laptop and my ipad. The printer and desktop are set to share printers but I cant find it on the laptop. I am assuming that once I can see the desktop on the network this "may" reslove this issue. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to fix the problem? I can still connect all computers to the internet. I can also see both computers in the network when I run the network configuration in norton 360.Many thanksEmily

It sounds like a problem with a firewall on the Vista machine -- particularly if it won't ping if you try to ping using Vista's IP address instead of computer name. Some firewalls are hidden. For example, the Cisco VPN client has a built-in firewall that is active even if the VPN client isn't. Also, try connecting using "nbtstat -a" as in the following article. This attempts to connect using NetBT (NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP, used by Microsoft file sharing). Ignore that it says Server 2003, it works the same in XP."How To Diagnose and Test TCP/IP or NetBIOS Network Connections in Windows Server 2003" < http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323388 >HTH, JW

Thanks so much for the response JW. I dont know what I did but all of a sudden it was working before you posted. I now have issues getting the xp machine to see the laptop. Not a big deal as there aren't many files I share. It was more about getting the print sharing working (which it is now I can see the desktop!) Will your recommendations above work for this?

No. If it ever works then a firewall is not your problem. Keep in mind that Microsoft Networking can take up to 15 minutes to find a new devices on the network. If it doesn't show up and you want to speed up the process a bit, try searching for the computer... Start -> Search -> [For Files & Folders (if Classic)]then at bottom in the "Search for other items" section, select "Computers"Enter the name of the other computer and click "Search Now".This launches a fairly aggressive search for the other computer.HTH, JW
