Unsing Imagex to backup Windows 7
Hi,
I have found this KB article but it applies to Vista only:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935467/en-us
I was wondering what was Microsoft's policy on this one.
Can imagex.exe be use as a backup tool for Windows 7?

That article is almost four (4) years old. The latest version of the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) work fine with Windows 7.

Possibly the author of that article was unaware of some
Limitations of ImageX
ImageX currently does not support the following NTFS features:
Extended attributes. Object IDs. Reparse points that are neither symbolic links nor junctions. ImageX will fail to apply them.
Sparse files. (They can be captured and applied, but they are no longer sparse after they are applied.)

Hi,
The ImageX tool is mostly used to capture the image, it's not recommeded to backup. You can download the tool from the Windows Download Center. For the usage, you can refer
to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748966(WS.10).aspx

Hi,
The ImageX tool is mostly used to capture the image, you can also use it to backup, since it’s not shipped with Windows 7, you should download it from the Windows Download
Center. For the usage, you can refer to: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748966(WS.10).aspx

Hi derosnec,
Sorry for missing the limitations.
ImageX tool is better for the deployment, although it can create an image of a computer, but not a good choice for the backup. It's not recommended.

Miya

Hi Miya.
I really don't know if those articles' caveats are actually practical limitations or not. They didn't cite any examples.
I'm glad EQ23 brought it to our attention.
