Updates disappeared
I am running Win 7 Pro x64. Within the last day or so the Updates have disappeared and next to "Updates were Installed" it says never. I have been running this OS since it was available on TechNet w/o this issue. In fact, I ran every beta release w/o this issue. All seems to be working OK and I can't think of anything I changed to cause this. All updates were shown as they should have been prior to this. Clicking on "View Update History" in the left column, shows the last 2 days' updates for MSE ongoing beta and nothing else. Any ideas appreciated.

John, Thank you for the reply. "1. Please let me know when the issue began to occur." Within the last 3 days - not exactly sure "2. Are there any hardware or software changes recently?" Not that I can recall I Use Acronis True Image to back up HD daily, and keep last 2 days. Both of them had the same issue. I followed your instructions step by step. It still shows "Updates were Installed : Never", even though the KB947821 Hotfix was installed as you instructed. The Hotfix update shows up when accessed from the "View Update History" option in the left pane. This option does not appear, as it always did, in the right pane along with: Most Recent Check for Updates:Yesterday at 10:40 PM Updates were Installed : Never You receive updates: For Windows and other products from Microsoft. One thing I did notice - In the Windows Update Service, it was set to Automatic (delayed start), I set it to Automatic, and it reverted back to Automatic(delayed start), this happened twice. It will not hold the Automatic setting. I just reset it a 3rd time and it seems to be holding after two checks on it. I'm going to print your reply and keep an eye on the updates. Thank you for your efforts.

After a couple more re-boots, Windows Update Service is back to "Automatic (Delayed Start) - not sure if this is related to the problem or not.

I doubt the "delayed start" is a problem. As long as it's running it's good. You didn't by chance do a System Restore at any point just prior to the update list goingblank did you?-Noel

I did several Acronis True Image back up restores in the time frame affected. The "delayed start" has returned, and it is the same way on my other drive - both Win 7 Prox64. The affected drive is an SSD and I think it may be starting to cause problems, other than this. I am also running MSE ongoing beta, and that MAY figure into this. Nothing like having a bunch of new software on a new technology drive. I just finished a new machine today and will be using that from now on. This one will be set up to play with and maybe I can figure out the isses. All does seem to be working OK though. Thanks again.

Hi,Our issue can mostly caused by the C:\Windows\Softwaredistribution folder was modified. The folder can be modified during performing disk Cleanup or other tasks. At this point, you can try system restore to restore the comptuer with the last restore point. After that, the Windows Update window would be able show the information properly. Then you can try to scan for new updates. I hope this can help you. John

BChat, for testing new software I used to use separate physicalmachines and set up test systemson them, as it sounds like you are doing. Then virtualization became mainstream, and now I set up test environments on virtual machines (I'm fond of VMware workstation, personally).Just wanted to mention that,as it can really be nice to have both a stable, reliablemain working environment (mine's Vista x64) and instant access to a full-blowntest environment, including copy/paste, etc. The only thing that's not easy to test this way is hardware support. If you can, look into virtualization. Very nearly the best of both worlds with few downsides.-Noel

Once I get this new machine all set up, and once I learn to leave things alone ( if ever), your suggestion sound appealing to me. Thanks.

Hi BChat, Have you tried to perform system restroe to fix the issue? After my further test, I found the message "Updates were Installed : Never" is caused by the C:\Windows\Softwaredistribution folder was modified. After you restored your comptuer to a prior point, please try to update the computer again.John

I decided to take the drive and use it as 2nd drive in the new machine, the drive is almost new. It was formatted, installed, and right now all seems to be well. It is a SSD and I like its performance, except for the UPDATE thing :-) I'm going to pay particular attention to what happens when/if I do a restore. I'm going to save this thread's info for future reference.

Hi BChat, I am glad to hear your computer works fine now.As your confusion, I would like to tell you that System Restore can return your PC's system files and programs to a time when everything was working fine, potentially preventing hours of troubleshooting headaches. In Windows7, System Restore is even more helpful. You can create more system restore points and see exactly what files will be removed or added when your PC is restored. You can get better understanding from the following link:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/What-is-System-RestoreI hope this can help you.John

John, I have been using Acronis True Image for years and keeping the last 2 days backups. In this case that was not enough, both were affected by the situation. In the future I'll keep more since I have plenty of HD space.
