I believe this error is related to rights of the installation account not sufficient.

FYI I was using domain account with local admin rights.

Here is how I could manage to upgrade:

- Create on purpose local installation account (local admin obviously)

- Move PC to workgroup

- Using local account Perform PC Refresh

- Apply the 80 updates found for Windows 8

- Uninstall HP Protect Tools and related applications (Face recognition, drive encryption etc.)

- Apply Windows 8.1 update as proposed in the store

I'll need to reinstall applications and rejoin my company domain to complete this 3 days process

Hope this helps

Hi,

This error code means that a required privilege is not held by the client.

At this point, I suggest we reset permission on Windows 8, remove security applications on your computer and try to update Windows 8.1 again.

Reset permission:

cd /d c:\

icacls * /T /Q /C /RESET

For detailed information about this command, you can refer to:

Icacls

Hope these could be helpful.

Same problem here. Tried everything that can be found here but still no solution. I allowed HP to take control of my PC remotely and they too couldn't troubleshoot the problem. Asked me to contact MS.

I agree with Patrice.  At the end I solved it just removing the pc from domain and installing with local administrator.  Mauro
