Upgrade Windows 7 over the RC version?
I have installed Windows 7 RC on my pc - all works fine currently. But when i want to install the final Windows 7 version (when it comes in October) - do I need a complete new setup (including the need of backup) or is it possible to upgrade to the final version? My PC is a 64bit system with Vista pre-installed when I bought it.ThanksM31

A "clean install' of the final version of Windows 7 is required.Carey Frisch

It might be possible to do an in-place upgrade from your pre-installed Vista to Windows 7 (final, RTM) if you follow the right upgrade path. See this matrix: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd772579(WS.10).aspx. From RC to RTM, you must choose a clean install. Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

It is true that you must do a clean install, however it's not so bad, because you can use Easy Transfer to transfer all settings and such right from your windows.old file (which will be created when you install the RTM over you RC).Hope this helps !!

Hey folks. It can be done!I found information in an engineering article located at http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/07/delivering-a-quality-upgrade-experience.aspxHere's the procedure I followed to upgrade the RC version 7100 to the RTM release. The upgrade worked slick as can be. So far... no issues. When you purchase your Win7 DVD in October, start with step 2 below. Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build). Browse to the sources directory. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (pictured below). Save the file in place with the same name. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.
