Upgrading Dell Latitude D610 to work with Windows 7
Ok, so it's October 2010. Anyone with a Dell Latitude D610 laptop will be pleased to know that you can upgrade it to run Windows 7 relatively easily.
Firstly I did a clean install of Windows 7 rather than an upgrade from XP or Vista. Once installed, you will notice in Control Panel -> Device Manager that 4 pieces of hardware don't have the right drivers installed. These are, Wireless Adaptor, Graphics
Adaptor, Sound and I forget the last one.
The Network port works, so attach a Cat 5 cable from your laptop to your router to establish an internet connection. Then run Windows Update. This will give you "optional upgrades" which includes all the device drivers that didn't install on your
Win 7 installation.
Once Windows Update has loaded everything you can configure the Wireless Adaptor and anything else you require.
Hope this helps

Better to go to the Dell web site and download the drivers from there. Downloading drivers from Windows is a risky thing.
I have to agree with Tracdayaddict, though. It's an old laptop and won't run W7 well. You will need to do a lot of customizing (start with disabling the Aero interface) to speed it up. Better make sure the memory is at least 2GB - 3GB.
