User Account disappeared on XP
My brother set up an account on my mom's computer and now her user account isn't showing up on the log-in screen. I am able to find a folder with her old log in name under C:\Documents and Settings\. How do I get it to show on the log-in screen? I've noticed that this is an issue for other people, but I haven't found the answer. Please help. Thank you in advance for your time.1 person got this answerI do too

Thank you for your answer, however, this did not help. Doing the ctrl alt del didn't bring up the name, or accept the name/password that is missing. I did as you said under a different user from step 2, but when I got the properties tab, the "account is disabled" was NOT checked. Could it be something else? I did check and apply and uncheck it again and apply, but that didn't work. The description given is "Built-in account for administrating the computer/domain." I'm hoping there is something else we can try. She did create another account to use, but she had files and things on her old one I'd like to have her access. Maybe, if I could share those files with the new account would be enough. But, I'm not sure how to do that either. Thank you in advance for your help again.

Hi, At least I have confirmed that you do not have a disabled account and I will continue help you with this. 1. In the Start Menu, select Run. 2. In the Run dialog, type the command to start the registry editor below. regedit 3. Navigate to the key, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \Winlogon \SpecialAccounts \UserList 4. In the right pane, right click and select, New > DWORD 5. A new item will be created, right click on it and rename it to the username (Eg. Administrator). 6. Then double click on the DWORD item named as the username (Eg. Administrator) you have created and enter a value, '1' in the dialog box. 7. Close registry editor and restart your computer, you can see the username (Eg. Administrator) account listed in the Login Screen. Please be very careful when you are editing the registry. I did this. Named it "Jane A" and it still did not show up on the log-in screen. I started looking in the files that I found that actually had that name on them, but there aren't any of the pictures and stuff that she had. I'm ready to give up on recovery of the log-in area, but where would the pictures have gone? And what causes this to happen? Thank you for your help so far. I really appreciate it.

Thank you for all your help. I did know this part though, it is how I knew that the file was still there. This is the file that I opened and found none of her special pictures and things though. I've given up and will not be checking the forum any longer. I will be returning her computer back to her today. Again, I wish to thank you very much for all your assistance. I hope you have a great day.
