User loves his profile settings, wants to join domain... how to please???
Surely, or HOPEFULLY, by now there is a better way to manage user profiles than copy+paste over one directory with another... I have a gal who has her system all decked out in her local user profile. Now that I have helped band-aid up their ailing server she is begging that she not lose her profile settings. I see this "advanced user profile" manager thang in Windows 7. Doesnt seem to do anything for me in this department though. So is there any smooth way for me to help her to make a seemless profile transition?++++++++++++++++++++ Jessica Moyer Twitter @luv2geek "Getting information off the Internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant." -Mitchell Kapor "Do you realize if it weren't for Edison we'd be watching TV by candlelight? As you mentioned, coping files over is one method, not that great though. I have heard from others that this application called, profwiz, works very well.- http://forensit.com It is possible that once the user logs in the new domain, you could log the user off, log on as an admin, and update the user's profile information in the registry (update the location for the profile). It has been too many years and I don't have the info handy, so I can't provide specifics.Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

I would first sit down with her and determine what, exactly, she needs to carry over. Often, I find, that folks want to make sure that they keep their "Favorites", desktop icons, printers, etc.. In just about every case, I've been able to migrate the desired elements off and replace/merge them in when the new profile is available. You can try the following method: 1. Log on as the new user account (make sure the new user account has administrator privilege). 2. Click the Start menu, and click Computer. 3. Click the Organize button on the left top corner and choose Folder and Search Options. 4. Under View tab, check the "Show hidden files and folders" box and click OK to save settings. 5. Navigate to the C:\Users\(old user name) folder. Note: The "old user name" refers to the user name of your old account. For example, if the user name of your old account is "Larry", the folder should be C:\Users\Larry. 5. Copy all files and folders in the C:\Users\(old user name) folder to the C:\Users\(new user name) folder. Not all settings will be moved to the new profile.
