Ok, here is my setup on my Windows 7 machine. I work from home and have a DHCP/DNS/Gateway router and several servers at home that I access while I work. I connect to my work network over a VPN connection established on my Windows 7 machine. I have disabled the default gateway on the VPN connection and have created a script to install the proper routes (route add ...) to the work networks. This allows me to connect to internet sites via my home ISP and at the same time all work traffic will be routed through the VPN connection. All this works fine with a LMHOSTS file (\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts) containing the WORK hostnames or I access the WORK hosts via their IP addresses. With this setup I can access my home servers, the internet via my home connection, and the work servers when via VPN. The problem is that recently the work servers have been changed to dynamic addresses and the static LMHOSTS file will no longer suffice. I have no control over this, so setting them back to static is not an option. I need to be able to set up DNS on my Windows 7 machine to resolve BOTH my home addresses and the work addresses. ipconfig /all reports that both my home network interface and the VPN interface have DNS servers assigned, but for some reason, only my local addresses will resolve when I use "ping" (or any other application). Strangely, the opposite is true if I use "nslookup". Nslookup uses the VPN DNS server (when I do not specify one on the command line) and will resolve only work addresses but not local. So, what's the deal? I thought that in the case of multiple DNS servers the operating system was supposed to query all, and use whichever one responds first. Am I missing something? Is there a registry setting to force the operating system to query all DNS servers, because I cannot find one in the TCP/IP properties for the local area connection or the VPN connection. Any help would be appreciated.
