VPN through Wireless Broadband
Using built inWin 7RC 7100 64-bitVPN networking, I can connect to the Exchange server at work from most internet connections: e.g.Comcast at home in MD, Verizon FIOS in NY. However, I recently tried to connect through a wireless broadband connection (Piedmont Broadband) set up in rural VA without success. Rec'd error 800. Should be connecting through PPTP. Ideas?

Did you have internet? The problem is only with establishing the VPN? Did you try L2TP protocol? You can get the connection type from your company's IT dept. They may also have some thoughts on a solution, as you are attempting to initiate the VPN via a wireless connection initially. That can sometimes introduce authentication/security issues.I have seen this issue in other posts. The solution was typically related to the router not supporting the VPN connection protocol in Vista or Win 7. Mostly wired connections to ISP (ie. DSL)Contact piedmont support. Perhaps there is a firmware update or a newer WAP/router they could provide.Hmmm... a search of Piedmont reveals an interesting story.ASUS P4PE-P4 Extreme 3.4gHz-2gb G.Skill PC3200-XPSP3:55gb-Win7RC:17gb-DATA:500gb-ASUS N6800GT

I have an internet connection, and can ping the server. I tried plugging an ethernet cable for a direct connection to the POE box, bypassing the local wireless router -- no go. Wednesday, Peidmont is going to reconfigure with a static IP address. I'll talk to them further then.

Cloyd,What I meant to point out is that you are wireless from your location to Piedmont's switch, correct? That link may be where the issue is in handling the VPN protocol. I didn't mean your connection to the router. The fact that you can ping the server tells us the authentication protocol is not being handled correctly at some point.Perhaps they will solve the issue through configuring a static ip for you. Did you specify the need for a PPTP VPN connection?Have you logged into the router to determine if the vpn settings are set to match what your company uses?ASUS P4PE-P4 Extreme 3.4gHz-2gb G.Skill PC3200-XPSP3:55gb-Win7RC:17gb-DATA:500gb-ASUS N6800GT

It can be the hardware issue. Please see the following article:
Error Message: VPN Connection Error 800: Unable to Establish Connectionhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/319108
The device can be the router you are using in the house, or the switch or router on the ISP side. If a router is used in the house, please temporary bypass it and test. Otherwise, it should be the problem on the ISP side.
You may also capture network traces and check the data packs of the TCP handshakes on port 1723 and the reverted packs.

Hi Cloyd,While Arthur is reviewing your information you may want run this Microsoft tool that I discovered. It will identify if the router has all of the features that you need.Good luck with the VPN!
