Version is 8.1 - no search or power off (shutdown/restart) options in start menu

I keep my computers up-to-date with windows update. My notebook is 8.1 and shows the search and power-off option in the start screen.

My desktop does not. I can go to the patch history and see 8.1 and my version checks out to be 8.1. Nothing is crashing, everything is running fine, and therefore I dont think the install failed or resulted in undetected errors

I cant find a setting I need to check.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Check whether you have 8.1 update 1 installed (KB 2919355) since that's the update which added the power-off options to the start screen. As mentioned here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/install-latest-update-windows-8-1 if you find it's not installed and it's not listed in the list of available updates, make sure that you already have KB2919442 installed as it's required.

KB2919442 was installed on march 31st.

I cant figure out why update 1 is failing. I have media center on my PC, would that cause problems?

Hi,

Is there any error message since update 1 installed failed? How about install update 1 manually? Please have a try.

A manual install is the next step. I went throught the process outlined here with no success.
