W7 Pauses
I have two identical HP Pavilion dv2104 notebook computers running W7 Home Premium as upgraded from XP Pro. One runs as expected, the other pauses when installing software, or even a program that could change settings. If I activate the process the screen goes black for anything up to 15 seconds and the the "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer" query arrives. Once answered (yes or no) the screen goes black again for another 10 to 15 seconds and then everything continues. The other computer goes through this process with, perhaps a flash of a blank screen - but basically without delay, which is what I would expect. Does anyone know how I might resolve this issue?

It would be much more logical for you to go to the HP forums and ask your question. Since you have two identical pieces of hardward, and supposedly you are absolutely sure the Windows 7 OS and other installed applications are exactly identical, discussing your issue in an HP hardware froum would drastically increase the probability of finding the answer in a froum with a much higher density of other users with identical hardware. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, This is a fairly common issue. It could be a driver or BIOS update that is causing your UAC to take time to dim and then prompt. A quick way to resolve this in Windows 7 is to click the windows button, type 'UAC' (no quotes) in the search box, and then move your slider from the default setting of 2 up to 1 up. The difference: 2 Up: Default - Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer, * Don't notify me when I make changes to Windows settings, * Recommended if you use familiar programs and visit familiar websites. 1 Up: Notify me only when programs try to make change to my computer (DO NOT DIM MY DESKTOP) * Don't notify me when I make changes to Windows settings, *Not Recommended. CHOOSE THHIS ONLY if it takes a long time to dim the desktop on your computer. Be sure to post back if that solves your issue as it sounds like one is set with 1 up and the other with 2 up from Never Notify on the UAC settings. Sorry, I had to read through the HTML there, but I would definitely look at the video drivers. If it were me I would deinstall drivers on both machines (including software (ie. ATI, NVIDIA, ETC)) and let Windows 7 install the drivers. If Windows 7 already installed the drivers then I would download all of the updates for that model computer and ensure that they were both up to date. One of the machines (albeit identical) could have A) different hardware B) different firmware levels C) different BIOS levels. Thats is what I would do. I haven't experienced this issue exactly, but I have had similar experiences with Windows 7 and flakey video. This is where I started. OK I am sorry about the HTML - that appeared when I tried to edit my post - this sort of thing seems to be happening to me lately! Both machines have the same BIOS, it is the latest one available on the HP Website for Vista 32 machines. (it would seem that HP believe that if they dont support W7 in machines that are 2 years old, we will rush out and buy a new one!). All of the drivers I have are Vista drivers as a consequence. Removing and automatically reinstalling the nVidia. Windows 7 did not install the drivers originally, I had to find them (Vista) on the HP driver support site for the model in question and install them manually. I also had a co-processor problem to resolve and have a sneaky suspicion that this may still be the root of the problem, however, I downloaded a suggested update which seemed to resolve the co-processor problem, although since doing so the co-processor is no longer listed in Device Manager. I have now been through the Device Manager and checked drivers for - everything - allowing Windows to go look for the latest. This is all the same for both machines, which leaves firmware and given that both machines are HP pavilion dv2104eu notebooks with a clean install of XP Pro followed by an upgrade to W7 Home Premium, on new hard drives, I am not sure what firmware might be involved. In the end, I suppose I should not care how a computer shuts down as long as it does - but to my mind it is not right and I like these things to be - right! Thanks for your help MightySW Mike

Thanks Mike, I would suppose that the answer then lies in the unpredictability of upgrading from XP. If you did a format of the drive during the W7 install then I could see them both working as required, however, if one of the machines was fragmented, had bad sectors, etc. I could see this being an issue. I know that the upgrade process to 7 isn't a perfect science so the profiles could also be an issue, meaning that when more data stays, and the laptops are not entirely the same when it comes to the amount of used disk space, then this could also be an issue... I think that we are spinning the ol wheels here. As long as you are happy with the outcome then so am I. Good luck Mike!
