WINDOWS 7 RC Loses internet connection
I have an annoying issue. My computer loses connection to the internet. I have to constantly right click on the NET Icon in the system tray and choose troubleshoot. It always resets the LAN adapter. I have noticed that this happens for sure on streaming videos or Audio (like a radio station etc.) Skype works. It can happen randomly no matter what I am doing. The thing is I had this issue with VISTA off and on. Installing the public BETA of WIN7 fixed this issue and I was happy. Upgrading to RC of WIN7 and it is back. I have checked the device manager and unchecked the power setting. So it is not allowed to turn off the Ethernet adapter.

Can you try a clean install? Upgrading to the RC can be the cause of problems more than a solution.

I could, it would be a huge hassle on this particular system. I had this same issue on VISTA ultimate after using for a year. It started doing it. Then I installed the WIN7 BETA and all was fine. Now after installing WIN 7 RC, it does it more than ever. It shouldn't be shutting off the network card, I have checked the power settings. The troubleshooter ALWAYS resets the network card to fix it. Windows says I have the best driver already.

While this will not help your issue, I went through a similar issue with a plug-in (USB) network adapter. (I have performed an upgrade install also. Have not gone to the clean install, yet.) Thought I had isolated the problem to not enough power being supplied through the port and got an internal network card. While the problem is not as frequent as before, Win7 still drops the internet connection by eventually disabling the network card. Win7 initially blames the default gateway as not being available. When it attempts to reset the adapter, it usually gets "stuck" and a reboot, or power switch is required to recover."The network" is just fine as my other computers (Vista) continue to maintain their link with both the router and modem to the internet. Driver is from the manufacturer and the most recent.

I have a similar issue. My local network works fine. I can even remote desktop in to other computers in my network and see the internet. I can't reach anything outside of my network. I had XP x64 and the previous Win7 x64 beta with no issues. The x64 RC has been dropping my connection daily though. All of my installs have been clean installs. Only solution I've had is to disable and re-enable my connection, or sometimes I need to physically disconnect and re-connect the cable. I have two network ports so I often will just switch ports and the problem is gone in seconds. Any ideas are appreciated.

I faced long time the same problem you described but i finally managed it to get a solution for me - i have old hardware - incompatible software and i am able to connect to internet without loosing connection if i disable security settings for user security management to enable going with the software of my provider online, to keep the connection upright till i close a session and then, when i start going online again i can do it only by clickin on enable connection in network-home modus - this is the only way to get a connection, but if i use the software entry of my provider it is me impossible to get a connection cause it always declares it wouldnt need admin rights to connect - sounds really stupid that all but as a matter of fact it is the truth; i have not changed ip4-6 parameters without one step - i used to write constant addis in the extented section and this works; i dont use 64 but 32 RC; the are a lot of things still puzzle me but things need time it seems,it took a long time also to get actual drivers for printer scanner a.s. on but the update did its job and now my small equipment runs almost the way XP3 and VISTA 2 did; i was alos connecting and siconnecting cables of an DSL/ADSL modem with no success; i used no to update the driver for my aged NIC - card - if i would install that driver the system advices me it wouldnt work anymore - tested that.

Well, it's been 10 hours without a drop in my internet connection! What did I do?Opened Device Manager, Network Adapters, Linksys Wireless N-PCI card properties. Select the Advanced tab.Disabled "Minimum Power Consumption"Don't know if this option is available on any other card, but had pretty much determined that adapters (internal or external) were not getting enough power to maintain. Don't know if Win 7 is somehow handling this "power saving" mode differently than before. But, it's working for now.
June 20th, 2009 5:46am
I do not show that option in the advanced TAB. I did go into the POWER MANAGEMENT TAB of my network card. UNCHECKED "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" That did not help in my case.

I seem to have found a solution. This is only a fix for this issue if you are running an nForce based motherboard with windows 7 RC. nForce Driver Version 15.35 WHQL Release Highlights: Ethernet Driver (v73.06) WHQL Network Management Tools (v73.05) "Sedona" SATAIDE Driver (v11.1.0.23) WHQL SATARAID Driver (v11.1.0.23) WHQL RAIDTOOL Application (v11.1.0.23) SMU Driver (v1.67) WHQL Installer (v7.01) http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_win7_64bit_15.35.html http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_win7_32bit_15.35.html I installed the nforce networking controls with this as well. I unchecked any settings to do with saving power and shutting off the network card. So far trying several things that normally have been losing my connection, nothing bad. Will edit/update if the network loss comes back. Hope this helps some people with this issue.

http://www.sevenforums.com/network-internet/9075-ethernet-connection-drop.html here is a protracted discussion and attempted solutions. Including power options, netsh options, and driver options. However, no solution is yet 100% viable. In my case, with EVGA 680i SLI mobo, using the vista x64 ethernet drivers (as i am using the x64 RC of windows 7), has given the most relief from the intermittant ethernet adaptor failures. It's important to note that the problem is that the OS ceases to operate the ethernet adaptor properly. It isn't that you are actually losing internet connection. Your internet is probaly still connected in your router just fine. Many people have tried the power saving options trick, some have had it work, most have not. Some have tried the netsh option listed on the sevenforums.com thread, some had it work, most have not. And some, like me, used old drivers from vista, and that worked, but others have not had it work. The problem started circa beta 7077, so my hope is just that microsoft is aware of this issue, that it affects primarily, but not exclusively, nVidia chipsets, and that they are working to solve it before RTM! imagine windows 7 got released with a bug in such a basic and necessary subsystem of the OS, ethernet! they'd get the whole vista Razz all over again. No one wants that! just keep posting your issues, make sure microsoft is aware that you have them, and post your system specs in case that helps them.

I found installing network management tools completely fux0rzed my connection. I lost connection every couple minutes. :(
June 29th, 2009 7:59pm
Yes, I found the same to be true. So, I finally broke down and did a clean install of Win 7 RC.Problems:USB Network adapter still drops out randomly and causes BSOD or lockup when Win 7 attempts to reset. (0x124)Using the MS Broadcom driver for the PCI card does not provide an option to turn off the Power Save mode for the card. (I tried MS and vendor drivers.)Setting Power Option to High Performance does not prevent the USB adapter from attempting to "sleep" when idle.Internet file transfers are significantly slowed compared to the Vista or Upgrade ability. (Seems to be throttled based on performing simultaneous downloads that produce a net speed greater than an individual files speed.) I'm going to look into "netsh int tcp set global autotuning=disabled" next. (A 2006 fix for the same problem in Vista.)Noticed:In Device Manager, the USB ports are set to a maximum bandwidth of 10% - 20%, based on the number of ports. I don't know if Vista was doing this, but I'm being told repeatedly by Win 7 that my USB devices would operate at a faster speed if plugged into a USB 2.0 port. When I pull up the map, they are all 2.0 ports. (Is this part of the "drop out" problem?)Overall, the clean install did not improve my network/internet performance... it made it worse. On the otherhand, use of the command: netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabledhad the result of increasing my data transfer speed over the internet from 54 Kbps to 250 Kbps.

I'm have the same problem on my new PC. I built it using a Gigabyte mobo which has an intergrated Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Gigabit NIC. The only solution I've found is to unplug my D-link DI-524 router and or Cisco 675 DSL modem and then plug back in. Sometimes releasing the DHCP address and reconnecting helps. It seems to effect my wireless connection as well as often when my desktop is disconnected so is my wireless laptop.Fr Elise - Support the Heart & Breast Cancer Foundations.

I have been having this same issue since the release of the RC. When downloading anything above 1mbits windows turns off the connection. When I play games my system is not utilized properly so I either have normal CPU usage and bad lag or a pegged CPU causing my NIC to lag.I have gone through Vista and Windows 7 drivers, power configurations, NetSH commands and changing the Half open TCP limit (which supposedly is disabled in Windows 7...)Each one of these works for about a day or two before I lag out again. I can use my full bandwidth, download anything without any problems, nothing lags on my old XP computer from 9 years ago. Jump on my 2 year old system with windows 7 and only the network fails. I really hope they get this sorted out in the final release, this is very annoying and as much as I love windows 7 I'll keep XP if I cannot use my network / connection to its full potential.

I think I found part of the problem, but I don't know if it is Win7 related or not. I called my ISP and they ran a diagnostic. On my Cisco 675 modem, three activity lights remained green even tho' the connection was dead. It appears my DLink 524 router was dying. Unfortunately, it's not for certain the problem but considering how old it is, replacing it seems like a good idea. My ISP replaced the Cisco but the problem remained. I'm not knowledgable enough to know if an OS can have any impact on a router or modem. Fr Elise - Support the Heart & Breast Cancer Foundations.

There seem to be 2 threads discussing what appears to me to be the same problem. The other thread is
Windows 7 network Problem
I am experiencing repeated occurances of loss of network connection. Every time it happens I wonder whether it was the latest change or action. But when restore a WindowsImageBackup that works for a while after I reimage, without the latest change or action, I still lose the connection. I have suspected the NIC driver, Truecrypt, Adobe products and updates, Sandboxie. The last time it failed after creating a new ImageBackup (after having brought my email settings up to date to match my WinXP configuration which I dual-boot). No network problems in WinXP. I have rolled back the NIC driver since the problem occured after Win7 updated to a newer version, but if that is a problem, it's only part of the problem. I agree with the post stating that this is a VERY SERIOUS problem with the Oct 22 deadline looming. Dell XPS, WinXP SP3, Win7 RC, Intel Pro 1000 MT

Don't know if its the exact same issue. For me its not random but would lose connection with more complicated activity. You can try it to see if it works for you. These are the newest nvidia win7 drivers. LAN port configuration: Sleep on disconnect: enabled flow control: disabled interrupt moderation: disabled ip checksum offload: disabled jumbo packet: 9014 bytes (this might have no effect for you) ALL large send offloads: disabled BOTH low power: enabled network address: not present priority & vlan: priority enabled receive side scaling: disabled speed/duplex settings: auto ALL TCP & UDP offloads: disabled vlan id: 1 ALL wake ons: enabled Speeds are great, can burst load lots of web sites with no connectivity problems, and works after both restart/shutdown. Haven't narrowed it down just yet. It appears to happen after enabling one or multiple of the disabled settings. If after more testing it happens to show back up again will let you know. I am also having this problem on 2 computers. I have the RC installed on 3 total systems, and the dropped connection happens on 2 of them. This dropped connection is seemingly random. I have tried all the techniques described here and none seem to have any effect on the randomly dropped internet connection. I have a desktop and a laptop that I am having this problem on. The laptop is a Dell XPS m1330 in the machine is a Broadcom NetLink Fast Ethernet adapter (wired) and an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN adapter. This system loses its connection randomly on both the wireless and wired connection. I have tested this on multiple wired/wireless routers and access points with similar results on all of them. The desktop computer is using a EVGA 780i SLI motherboard. This has an nvidia chipset with 2 NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet adapters. I have had very similar problems with this system losing its internet connection, but in addition when this system loses its connection, it also loses its LAN communication. To remedy both computers using their connections, I goto the Network and Sharing Center - then change adapter settings and disable and re-enable the affected network adapter. This fixes things for some time until it happens again. I dont know why the 3rd system doesnt seem to lose its connection. I am using a USB 802.11g wireless adapter on that system that I can not remember the model number of off hand. Any help on this would be appreciated. I am left wondering if any of the more recent builds of Windows 7 also have this issue. It would be nice if people could chime on builds newer than 7100 (the RC1) and their network issues there.

I really don't get this "randomness" that some of you state. Disable everything that doesn't stop the LAN from working. If your unsure disable it and find out. Change anything that allow change. There's tons of stuff so go crazy. Don't think "I want that enabled." Just disable the thing.

Unless I'm reading this wrong you state the Dlink was dying but had the Cisco modem replaced? Replacing the Dlink should fix the issue. Routers and modems die sometimes remarkably fast. Nothing you can do about it.

By "random" I mean there is no clear indication as to what is causing the disconnects - the timing and cause are not clear and the disconnects do not occur in a regular pattern. Hence - random. Usually these problems can be resolved by looking in logs or in the error reporter. In this case, I have indeed turned off everything except the bare necessities. I have tried this over and over (more than 2 weeks of trying different individual settings).

Mine are not random, my network slow ness online is tied to the way Windows 7 is filtering my active connections. I too have gone through just about everything I can think of to tweak it and it does not help. If I torrent trailers off Vuze when the speed hits 1mb/s my connection throw's up the yellow ! triangle and I have to restart the adapter to get back online. This is the same when downloading through the browser for patches or demo's. Not as frequent that way but still happens. I can make it happen everytimeif I load a webpage that has a few embedded video clips displaying at once, like some forums will. As the computerramps up thespeed to buffer them my connectiondies. I believe its tied ot the half open limit which was supposed to be removed. Its annoying paying for a 2 megabyte connection and only getting 50% of it.I made a few tweaks to that end and they worked for a day and then the problem was even worse. Everything else system wise runs great, a few times I will launch something and its CPU usage is much higher than normal but it will stabalize with a little time.

My FIOS actiontech router died after a little over 1 yr. Although that was an earlier version. Due to my settings I believe Win7 RC is wanting control of everything including anything that can be done on the network card itself. If not it doesn't play right. Disabling those offloading settings has worked perfectly in my case. Its surly something that should be fixed with the official version.

That sounds like the problem I was having. More complex activity which also means more bandwidth usage kills the connection. If your slowness was tied to Win7 then everyone would be having the problem too. I fixed mine and the fix is posted above so it doesn't make sense to me.

If your hitting a speed burst it can seem "random" enough - anything that hits the speed needed whether its apparent or not. I don't know if you use tabs on not in your browser but if you do and keep opening a bunch of sites fast does it happen soon after? (firefox allows you to click on a bookmark folder and open all tabs at once. If it wasn't for that I might not have figured out my problem. Do that with a few folders is rapid succession and you have some major bandwidth hits happening for an extremely fast way.) I can't imagine all of us are having/had different problems. Coincidences aside.
July 16th, 2009 1:13am
I am certain this issue is caused directly by Win7. I have a network of 4 computers which have run for a couple of years with no network or internet dropouts at all. I purchased a brand new PC and loaded Win7 RC1 onto it. I also loaded my firewall which is the same as on all the other PCs. Within a couple of hours of turning on the Win7 PC, both the network and internet are lost. The network connects via a DLink G604T modem/router and when the problem occurs, I am unable to access the modem. To re-establish the network and internet, I have to turn the Win7 PC off and turn the modem off and on again. There are no problems if I don't turn the Win7 PC on. The new PC has an MSI G31m3-1 v2 motherboard, intel CPU and 4gb memory. When the problem first occurred, I did remove my firewall but that did not make any difference so I reinstalled it again.

Have you tried powering down everything [the d-link and all devices connected,] unplugging everything from the router/modem except for the Win7 PC and ISP connection and powering those two up. Does it still happen? Does the d-link have the latest firmware? When you have to power cycle a router/modem I wouldn't totally blame Win7. It might be starting the fight but something else is fighting it and that means its just as involved.

Had the same problem going from W7 Beta to W7 RC. Using Nvidia 590SLI chipset, LinkSys router. All have latest drivers and firmware. Read all other suggestions, tried most. None of those worked. This is what worked for me: Got rid of all instances of IPv6. Even removed the protocol. Disabling IPv6 from the NVidia Network Control Panel didn't actually disable it even though NVidia reported it was. Make sure IPv6 is unchecked in "Local Area Connection Properties". Check "Network Adapter" advanced properties in "Device Manager" and make sure IPv6 doesn't show up or it is disabled if can't be removed. Solution only worked when "ALL!" instances of IPv6 were either removed or disabled. Haven't had one problem since. This may not solve for all configurations but I hope it keeps some from tearing their hair out. Have great day!

Hi had high expectations of arriving here and finding a working solution to this constant losing of internet connection, or suffering from extremely poor speeds, but alas I was mistaken as it seems that this is a major ongoing problem. I have cowered the forums and bulletin boards in the hope that I might finally be able to enjoy the pleasure of a Windows 7 test drive, but it seems this is not to be. I have pretty well covered most of the myriad of suggestions on offer, including driver updates, Wi-Fi adapter changes, hard wire to the modem, hard wired to the router and the list continues. Having now just pre-ordered Windows 7 I truly hope that they find the answer to this obviously major issue and I would hate to be buying another Microsoft cup mat.

Welcome to the world of inexplicable silences from MS and NIC card manufacturers. Wouldn't it be great to receive a reply something like 'Yes, we are fully aware of the problem and are working to resole it fully before release' or 'Win7 architecture differences are the cause of this problem and we are working with the NIC manufacturers to develop compatible drivers'. How hard can it be to make suitable relies? I have already fed back to MS through the Win7 review that UNLESS NETWORK STABILITY ISSUES ARE RESOLVED, I WILL NOT CONSIDER MIGRATING TO WIN7 Sorry to have to say this, but I've been patient and expicit with my reports of the problem, and have yet to receive a reply that even remotely descibes why the problem occurrs. I have to assume MS is ignoring this. A great shame, because in most other aspects of the OS, I think it's definitely an improvement on Vista. Pity about the loss of Windows Mail though.

Yes on my journey around the internet I have fought my way through the jungle of complaints about the connectivity problems that seem to shroud Win7 RC. But I have to agree not once did I find ANY feedback from MS with reference to the problem, it is almost like the whole world is aware of the issue, well everyone except MS! I would be nice if just once MS would pop their collective heads up and say Yes your right guys and well fix that! I guess we can all dream a little right?

Has anyone tried the solution that worked for me. It's posted above. I thought this would be a forum to find solutions instead of flaming Microsoft. If others with different configurations solve the issue with the above solution then the problem can be narrowed to IPv6. I am not defending Microsoft but unlike Apple they are coding complex software to run on many, many more hardware configurations . The above solution is easy to change back if it doesn't work. If it works post along with hardware. If it doesn't, please post that also. Have a nice day!

Please get off your high-horse 'fibonacca011235' You do not need to UNDERLINE your comment to make your point here. Like many users I would like an acknowledgment that MS is aware of and is working on the problem. This is not flaming. I have tried your solution and just about every other suggestion posted on this site and others, and they did not work for me. Your 'solution' is at best a work-around and does not address the core concern. We cannot consider Win7 implementation into an enterprise environment if connectivity issues remain. If MS cannot take the trouble to at least suggest why this is occurring, then the community has to become more vocal to get the point across. I am not interested in an OS that requires hacks and tweaks to get it running as advertised. Win7 shows great promise, but the basic issues need to be ironed out before October.
July 16th, 2009 10:22pm
Then post your configuration that so we know that the fix that worked for me (Nvidia chipset) does not apply. The objective is to isolate the problem. I see nothing in your posts constructive. This, after all, is not final release software. I believe Microsoft made that clear.

The purpose of this release is to evaluate the production readiness of Win7. The results should, guide MS on whether it is stable enough for sale. If, after all the posts and problems with Wireless there is no solution or response, is it likely the release in October will include a fix? I doubt it. It's possible fibonacci is on to something as I have so far managed 3 hours without network dropping having disabled IPv6. Initially, it made no difference, and in fact dropped after 10 minutes, but since the last re-boot it's holding on. I'll report back if anything changes.

Well, it was an improvement. Lasted just under 3.5 hours, and then dropped as I was trying to move about 50Mb of files onto the laptop. Only re-boot will get it up again - ie, diagnostics and trying to repair the connection do not work. Disabling/enabling the adapter from device manger no good either. Something or some event locks the NIC up solid.

I dont really think that I was flaming Microsoft, I was simply stating what a LOT of other people were most likely thinking. I take nothing away from MS for the effort that goes into coding a beast like Win 7 but I still maintain that it would be nice if just now and again they popped up and said something, anything that would point us in the right direction or at least acknowledge the error.
I have notice that the words (Nvidia chipset) pop up a lot. However I am suffering from exactly the same issue and I do not have Nvidia. I am currently running a modified Advent PDQ5300 desktop pc. And when running XP Pro or Vista Home Premium, (Dual Boot) I have never has this issue on this system.

Hi all, I've been experiencing intermittent drops with my Netgear RangeMax N-spec PCI adapter (WN311B). I did a clean install of Win7 RC 64-bit, and my system has an Asus M3A78 motherboard. My connectivity would last anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days before I'd see the /!\ telltale on the wireless indicator in the task bar. Rebooting was the easy fix, but the last couple times I've tried to do a ipconfig /release and /renew, and even added in a /flushdns once or twice for good measure. Each time the process completed, the IP address re-assigned to the adapter was a 169.254.x.x series. A couple times, the process hung and I had to reboot anyhow. The router is a FiOS Actiontek model. Tonight, I finally decided to dig out the 100' CAT5 to run it from my attic office to the router in my dining room two floors down, and disable the Netgear until something can be found. I'm using build 7100. Not sure what else I can provide for help. Regards, -Ed S

I have been able to fix my network and internet dropping out by updated the network adapter driver. I found that Realtek had just released a driver for Win7 and it works fine.

I am having kind of a similar situation. I have RC installed on a desktop (x64) and on a notebook (x86). On the desktop no problems at all. When i startup, wireless or cabled, i have no network. After about 5 to 10 mins i get a connection. My cabled connection is DHCP, my wireless connection is fixed ip.I use a netgear 3500 router with the wireless, cabled is at work on a Windows 2003 domain. When working longer hours witn notebook, the connection drops. I am then still connected to the router, but cannot ping the router. When cabled i also loose connection to the rest of the networkwhile i still have the IP address and the connection is still live. Rebooting has been the best solution as yet, or otherwise wait and see what happens. When a repair is tried i get a message saying that there is a problem with my driver. This was not an upgrade, but a clean install.I hope at some point a solution will be found for this. I have had and still have the same problem with a Vista Ultimate on a cabled desktop.

Hello folks,I've been having the same problems with W7 and an Nvidia adapter. After reading through this thread, I decided to try loading an app that continuously streams data from the Internet, in order to keep things from going into sleep mode (or whatever). For me, this was Fidelity's Active Trader Pro, but methinks it could be any appthat does this. This has seemed to work, at least for now.Try it and see if it prolongs your Internet connection...Best, JR

I have similar problem, but fine solution ! :)on internet acces ( right botom on screen ) press on your wireles network - properties - Connection and unmark all 3 , they must be empty, so you lose automatic acces to internet and must press connect to internet manualy, but internet stops disconeccting. It helpt me and i hope will help rest until Windows will be fixed , good luck :)

I have the same problemandI know of nopermanent fix yet. In about 40 hours of work on a clean-install RC, I've lost internet connectivity about 5 times. I'm working on a desktop connected via ethernet to a wireless bridge connected to a wireless network; other XP computers are on the same network and they never lose internet connectivity, so I'm sure it's not an access point or router problem in my case. Power-cycling the wireless bridge repairs the problem for me. I haven't seen any download speed limit problems; I'm on Comcast cable and get a max ofabout 6 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up.
After reading this thread, I turned off the power management in the LAN driver, but it hasn't been long enough to know if that's a fix for me. I'm unwilling to remove IPv6 because that can cause problems with Homegroup networking (see http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/4c0770bb-247a-46d6-8267-c3715410d98f).

I seem to have found a solution. This is only a fix for this issue if you are running an nForce based motherboard with windows 7 RC.nForce Driver Version 15.35 WHQL Release Highlights: Ethernet Driver (v73.06) WHQL Network Management Tools (v73.05) "Sedona" SATAIDE Driver (v11.1.0.23) WHQL SATARAID Driver (v11.1.0.23) WHQL RAIDTOOL Application (v11.1.0.23) SMU Driver (v1.67) WHQL Installer (v7.01) http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_win7_64bit_15.35.htmlhttp://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_win7_32bit_15.35.htmlI installed the nforce networking controls with this as well. I unchecked any settings to do with saving power and shutting off the network card. So far trying several things that normally have been losing my connection, nothing bad. Will edit/update if the network loss comes back. Hope this helps some people with this issue.

Thank you so much!!!! My internet connection was getting slower with just a couple of hours of use and I had to restart the computer to make the connection faster. I tried a million things and nothing worked. This fixed my connection and it went from <1Mb/s to 14Mb/s without restarting it. THANKS A LOT!!!!!

hi, im also experiencing the same problem..im running on windows 7 ultimate and using broadband router for 2 pcs..this happend to me twice when im actively using my pc..the disconnection mostly happens when i left the pc for downloading..i tried the following already:- disabled standby mode- disabled monitor off- uncheck "turn off this device" for the lan hardware (the one with "allow only packet to turn on the device"..something..)\- uncheck IPv6 in the lan properties (im still not sure how to disable IPv6)- disable device, turn off modem, turn off switch- updated lan driver (i believed dated 07/xx/2009)- note: this is a clean installthe only solution i have so far is to restart the pc..i'm not encountering this error previously when im running xp.. thanks!

hi everyone, same problem here. i've been running win7 for a couple of weeks and haven't found a solution yet. the problem came out immediately after a clean install. i was using the same config with vista and everything was working great. btw i've just noticed that the connectivity loss happens mainly when i'm surfing the web. actually seems like that a considerable up&downstream (i.e. torrent sharing with modded half-open connections limit) activity doesn't really affect it. this puts a huge question mark in my mind cause since then i've always been thinking the problem was due either to a driver issue or an intense network activity and this seems to change the scenario a bit. i'll try to see whether im right or not and, if so, what kinda websites seem to be causing this. @clinks63: to be sure to remove ipv6 connectivity i think you should use the netsh command via commands prompt and eventually remove some registry keys. personally i don't think this is the right way to the solution but maybe it could be worth a try. cheers

After months of struggling to resolve the random disconnects and NIC lock-ups with my wireless adapter (Linksys WMP300N v1) it seems there is a solution available in the form of some modified Broadcom drivers originally intended for Vista 64. Take a look at the following link: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8726 I suggest you create a system restore point before installing the new driver. Note there are 2 downloads - the full Broadcom install package and an .inf file. Extract the drivers and replace the .inf as per the instructions. Since installing, I have now run nearly 24 hours without a hitch. With the previous driver I could guarantee a disconnect immediately I accessed steaming video or tried to download a significant sized file. I have repeatedly tested with these. The information came from the Linksys discussion board (http://forums.linksysbycisco.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Adapters&thread.id=19997) If the solution works for you, please post reply for the benefit of all members. Cheers, Chris

hi. sorry for the delay but ive benn away for a while. actually i haven't tried any of the steps i found yet (not on vista and 7 where ipv6 support is native), but giving a quick glimpse at them i would suggest you to try these out: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929852 and for a brief explaination http://4sysops.com/archives/why-and-how-to-disable-ipv6/ hope this helps. meanwhile my problem just got fixed on his own. actually i don't know whether the fix was provided through automatic updates, but honestly don't think so (mainly because i manually set the updates to be installed and didn't notice anything about networking or NIC drivers in updates specs). simply, one day the connection kept on falling and the day after it was fine. it's been ok for a while at the moment, so i guess all my ideas about web surfing and networking stress were completely off topic. i'm sorry i'm not being of any help like this but since it's working fine i'm not going to mess settings up and risk to get the problem back without knowing how to recover. if something new will show up, i'll let you know. ciao all!

I've had the very same issue with WIN 7 dropping Network and Internet connection. The only thing consistant had to do with some form of video streaming or Flashintense site. Have all self built PC's (6 counting laptops, HTPC, etc) so I know them and my networkfairly well. Half of'm are running XP the other half Vista until the WIN 7 Upgrade. Tried the IPV6 disable, even as going as far as to do a REGEDIT to fully disable to no avail. I use exclusively Gigabyte MB'sthat vary in the built-in Network chip they use. The WIN 7 machine had the Nvidia chip so I did a roll back to the earlier driver mentioned above. WIN 7 didn't baulk at all and it fixed the network/internet drops completely. Haven't turned IPV6 back on yet as I don't see the need. Just wanted everyone to know that in my case it was definitely the Nvidia driver that came with WIN 7 that was the culprit.

Sorry wrong button...proposed as answer!I eventually bought a new mainboard with an intel X58 chipset and experienced the same problems of internet connection loss. At one moment I got the silly idea to move my Asus router to another place in the house and of course it didn't help. Then I disconnected the router and connected my computer directly to the modem and now I have no problems what so ever. Just the standard settings of Windows 7 and downloading with a constant speed of 4Mbit. I'm not a real genius with networking, but I suspect some routers do not communicate that well with Windows 7!Good luck and I hope this could be of any help!

hi. honestly i don't think this is a router related issue (mainly because your other lan computers work properly). so let's assume the most reasonable hypothesis that this is a windows 7 problem. it would be interesting at this point understanding where exactly win 7 fails. if removing the router from you network apparently solved the problem it could be a DHCP error: when win7 is supposed to renew its ip in the network something goes wrong and the ip assignement is lost. you can try to check your router settings and see what's the ip renew interval supposed to be. then you can see if this interval is similar to the time elapsed before the connectivity is lost.. i'm just guessing, you know, but this is the best idea i've had so far. maybe some further testing will help making things clearer. cheers.

I'm sad to say I'm now getting this problem again since I installed the "release" version of Win 7. The Beta played up a bit, and I turned off IPv6 which cured that. RC1 was fine. Now, "final paid for release" build 7600 (Home Premium) is doing it again. Symptoms are as above. The network card on the motherboard is a Realtec RTL8139. It seems to be network activity that upsets it in my case. It will occasionally block one or another website, briefly, then allow it again. However, if I try to transfer any significant amount of data to or from my laptop (six feet away, and connected by cable to the same router), it will drop all connections to the router. At that point, nothing works on the Network or the internet, although the laptop still has full Internet access (so it's not the router). Network and Sharing troubleshooter usually kicks it back on line - sometimes needing two or three attempts. I've turned off all power-saving options. The interim solution, if I can't find a fix in the next day or so, will be a USB WiFi dongle and removal of the Cat 5 cable. It'll slow things horribly, but at least the networking will work.

another solution that has worked for alot of us is if you have 2 lan ports available then connect them both and bridge the connection. the underlying issue is something to do with cpu cycles devoted to the network connection. as soon as you do something fairly cpu intensive (ie. streaming, playing games) the connection drops requiring you to reset the adapter.kourgath

Great... "CPU Intensive" like exactly what I use my PC for, playing games :/ Looks like I'm going back to Vista for now. I can't be counted on in WoW if my connection just randomly drops. I am glad that this is happening to more people though, maybe a fix will be more easily forthcoming then. It's good to not be alone. It's a terrible problem though :(

I don't know what I did, apart from turning off ALL power saving options and all "sleep" or "hibernate" stuff, but mine's been fine for the last two days. The "Credential Manager" still forgets all its settings after every restart (another known problem that some folks seem to have, and some don't), but I've learned the password to the other machines on the net now, so I can soon fix that. It's just a pain in the neck at every startup.

Whenever they patch I lose internet but only on te Windows 7 machine.Only solution is to shut it down. Turn off the router. Physically swap the cables. Turn the router back on. Boot up the computer. It's unacceptable.I bought a second version of Windows 7 for one of my other machines and it is just sitting in the box. No way I will install it until they FIX this.I see this has been a problem since last spring in beta.

hi there! i come with some fresh news that partially confirm one of my "old" ideas about this damn issue. a few days ago i got my Creative xPCI card back from RMA and guess what? the problem turned up again! as far as i remember, the problem stopped occurring after i had my audio card mounted/unmounted several times (while trying to fix it at home). honestly i didn't pay attention to this as long as my card was actually still mounted on my pc (though unused) when the loss of connectivity problem got fixed on his own. at this point i think there might be 2 kind of issues: 1) conflicting IRQ issue (which seems the one bafare came across with): should be fixable by updating north/south bridge drivers in order to let windows work properly with non logical addresses 2) hardware interference issue (honestly, i don't think this is the case): this idea bumped into my mind just because in my MB the audio sound card and the integrated ethernet are really close one another. tried to put a slim wooden layer between them but nothing changed. again, i can't explain why a manual disable/enable command on the NIC adapter fixes the problem (permanently for that session). maybe IRQ reassignment? IRQ mapping seems fine in system properties, sound card & NIC adapter are put in consecutive order though. shall we need to invent an IRQ interference to explain this odd problem? i'll keep on with further tests, if anyone's got news please report them! cheers

Yeah so I have the same problem. My config is: Router at Living Room DLink AP Client at bed room, to that AP I got both PC and PS3 attached by ethernet cables. PS3 NEVER gets disconnected as PC does so it is not a matter of either DLink or main Router. Tried everything: Unchecking TCPIP v6 Scaling thingy from CMD Downloaded Nforce drivers and Nforce control panel to disable any possible feature It only disconnects when I'm either streaming or downloading torrents at fast speeds. If I'm only navigating there seems to be zero problems. My system is: Core Duo 6550 2GM RAM Gygabyte 600 series [don't exactly know the model, how can I check this? I totally forgot about it] Gygabye Nvidia 8800GT Windows 7 Ultimate So far this is the THIRD big problem with Windows 7. First it was Divx videos looking like ____, fixed it thanks to CCCP codecs. Second was Soundblas XFI and 5.1 settings and now this. Seriously this is killing, I can't download things!!!!!! Also, the only way to put it back after I lose the connectivity, it's reseting the DLINK AP Client, I seriously don't get it Cheers

I had this issue on a brand new Win 7 Toshiba but, it didn't oiccut out of the box but after running Windows update and Installing a network Printer. After scraching my non existant hairs and futilly fiddling with the router I chuntered back through some system restore points till it 'got a bit better', trhe following morning, nothing would run, XP, Vista, dead, even connected via an ethernet cable. So I looked askance at the router, preyed hard, and reset the router back to the factory settings. Wow, it sprung into life. Almost, i had to reconfigure it before the clients would work again but i couldn't even access the config screens before the reset. It has run perfectly ever since, I've applied the maintenance! In fact more maintenance! There are two updates I did avoid, one to the Ethernet Driver, and avoided adding a network printer - which I think is the real culprit. The Win 7 Printer support is MUCH reduced from Vista - nasty nasty trick to pull on us! And my Printer is NOT supported under Vista - The HP web site claims it is, but then again it isn't in their list of drivers updated for Win7. Forked Tongue? AndI got a bit inventive on alternative drivers. I am pretty sure this was the killer. HP wants money for support: when did that happen? And having no income I can't afford them. When a support call represents 40% of my monthly income I tend to shy away from support.FYI the errant printer is an HP4050 with a network card installed.

Do you have nvidia chipset ? just get lastest driver for windows 7 and everything is gonna work normal. It happened to me on two computers and they work fine now after update the nvidia drivers , I don't have but nvidia chipset on all my computers , I don't know if the same problem happens on other chipset since I just use nvidia. Good luck.

My computer also loses internet connection everytime i restart my computer. It connects to my network but says no internet connection. I have a built in network card on my Gigabyte MB. So i went out and bought a pci lan card thinking it would be a good bandaid but nope, same thing. I have win 7 ult x64. 3 other computers on my network connect just fine. The only work around i can figure out is to reinstall the network card driver each time i restart my machine, then it works fine til i reboot. getting quite annoying.

I have an Intel p35 chipset and win 7 x64 so i don't think it has anything to do with Nvidia chipsets. I also turned off my AVG and that didn't solve it. Bought an add on network card and that didn't solve it. Changed power settings- nada. re installing lan driver does something to jolt it back until reboot. then-nada. Windows update-nada. Nothing works SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! OH BTW XP WORKS but i'd rather move forward.

Windows firewall!!! turned it off and now it loads everything properly after reboot. I can easily live without windows firewall. Now I'm happy again. My router has a firewall and I have AVG 9.0. that should be enough. Thanks everyone! PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Try disabling realtime protection in Windows Security Essentials
I had the exact same issue on my Windows 7 64 bit install. After hours of searching to see what was causing the issue, I found that Windows Security Essentials was the problem.
Internet started working normal again after disabling realtime protection. Since my internet worked just fine after just installing Windows 7, it's probably some update to security essentials that messed some things up.
Let me know if this solves your issues...

hi. the more I keep on trying to find a solution to this damn problem, the more I get convinced it's a chipset driver issue. Anyway, as far as in the latest days I started being really fed up with all this and needed to reset my adapter at every Windows boot, I decided to use an "old fashioned" fix. Actually it is not a fix at all, but at least it's useful: if you need to reset your adapter manually at every boot to make it work, this little batch script will do it for you. All you gotta do is copy these commands in a new notepad document, save it with .bat extension, add it to your startup program list. Now at every boot your adapter will be forced to reset. If you don't wanna add it at startup, you can just run it manually by double clicking the file. Here's the batch commands:
echo Local Area Connection Adapter Reset - Alessandro Bigi 2009
echo ----------------------------------------------------------
echo This batch script will reset your LAN adapter via netsh command.
echo Please note that THIS WILL ONLY WORK FOR CONNECTIONS NAMED "LOCAL AREA CONNECTION"
echo If you want the script to work on different connections name, edit it with notepad and replace name="Local Area Connection" with name="Your Connection
Name" in the lines below
echo -----------------------------------------------------------
echo Disabling Adapter...
netsh interface set interface name="Local Area Connection" admin=DISABLED
echo Done.
echo Enabling Adapter..
netsh interface set interface name="Local Area Connection" admin=ENABLED
echo Done.
echo -----------------------------------------------------------
echo Network Adapter was successfully reset.
echo Will now quit.
PAUSE
If you would like the command prompt window to close automatically without pressing a key, remove the pause command at the end. I REPEAT: THIS IS NOT A FIX. It's just a workaround and it is not tested. It may work, just like it does for me, but it may not. If a manual disable/enable on your network adapter doesn't prevent the problem to occur, this is completely useless. Hope this could be helpful to someone, a part from me. Good luck you all!

After many hours of researching this problem. The solution I found is quiet simple. Plug your USB v 2.0 device into a USB v 2.0 port not a USB v 1 port. Background I installed Windows 7 Ultimate and my problem began. I tried everything listed above and on other sites, but could not keep my system connected to the internet more than5 minutes. Since I change to a v 2.0 port my internet connection has been up 5 hours without a single lock up........ Try it...you'll sleep better. Steve

Like most here, I have had issues and I have tried a variety of recommended resolutions to no avail. I have two computers that I did a fresh install of W7, one is a 680 and one is a 780 MoBo. The 680 has not had a single problem since install and uses the same router so I knew that wasn't the problem. My 780 has been a nightmare of disconnects every3 -10 mins for no reason. I then stumbled on this simple solution and I have not had a problem since. I am sure there is not a single solution that will work for everyone so keep trying, this one takes less than 20 secs and worked for me. Credit goes to the author at this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/Thread/14C7EE8F-F287-4948-ADEA-F598B7D18C48"I was having issues with Windows 7 intermittently dropping connection. After about 3 or so minutes, especially during heavy TCP activity, my NIC would loose the gateway settings and drop to a limited connection. Performing the built in troubleshooter would correct the issue, only to have the connection drop again within minutes. After a little bit of research, it turns out that my NVIDIA nForce Drivers (the most recent ones from NVIDIA, and the Microsoft ones), were the source of this. I attempted to use NVIDIA's signed drivers and still had the same issue. Turns out there is an issue with a driver setting in both that is causing this disconnections. If you go in to the driver settings for the NIC (edit: go to device manager for this), and under the advanced tab there is a setting for Receive side scaling set to be enabled by default. By disabling this option, my network connection came back alive and has not lost connection yet."

Thanks a lot Folke !! Only this worked for me !! :-) (de-activate real time protection of Security Essentials) Little precision : I use Win 7 final release not RC

It's the option "activate real time protection". You have to de-activate it at each reboot :-(((

Glad it worked for you!
However, this actually only solves connecting to the internet, but the network stack is still partially broken. See my post for more details:http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/1996412f-252d-4dd5-9226-7a593a22ef6b/

Win 7 has drivers for your computer but installing chipset drivers can solve the problem too, I thought nvidia chipset have problems with win 7 , but I don't think thats the real reason , I had real time protection off, on both computer using final release of windows 7 and had the internet problem so I just installed some drivers and everything started working normal, I also installed a wireless adapter and the internet problem started again so I installed the drivers it and again got it working , even thou windows has drivers for most of hardware installing original drivers help solving the problem with the internet .

Finally it was not the end of the trouble.... I hope the last try I made will be the good one : as reported by many people to be the real issue, I disabled IP V6 in the Lan Card configuration. It seems to work. 10h without any cut in the connexion (after the first necessary reboot) Reactivated the MS antivirus. Seems ok. To be confirmed. EDIT After 15 hours, connexion stopped... EDIT 2 : Re-desactivated the Security Essentials Real-time and now seems ok... :-) EDIT 3: Confirmed ! 2 days without disconnexion. :-)

Asus Striker Extreme MBNvidia Nforce drivers.. 680i SLIWindows 7Have the same problem with disconnects. No problems with Vista 64. Upgraded to Windows 7 and the problem appeared. The adapter has an IP address but is unable to reach the default gateway. Disable/enable the adapter fixes it.

I have problems where I have to repair the wireless and it always says the gateway was not available. I think this is related to having Azeurus Vuze installed. If you have that running, try closing in. I have reverted to version 4.3.0.2 of Vuze now after
someone suggested this fixes it.. Can't say if it has yet as I only just downgraded.

This is a Microsoft issue. Plain and simple. I can not accept dropping connectivity dozens of times a day. I have tried fixes and uninstalls and still it continues. MS needs to focus on changes they need to make , NOW. I will not support MS unless they get
off their high horse and listen to their customers.
