Check out Sysinternals Autoruns. It provides an extensive listing of the programs that start when the computer boots and when you log in. You can use the information it provides to determine where you add your own autostarts.

First, note that you should be concerned with *all* programs thatstart automatically, not just with those that go into the system tray. Not all auto-starting programs manifest themselves by an icon in thetray. On each program you don't want to start automatically, check itsOptions to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure youactually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon"option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn'twork, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically. However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose ofrunning the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tellyou, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programsyou run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, butothers have no effect on performance. Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should dois determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and whatthe cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can tryinternet searches and ask about specifics here. Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informeddecision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. > Flip side haw can I add programs to automatically start at startup? in addition to the posted suggestion(s) of clearing out your startups via the msconfig console, you can also disable third party services.in msconfig there is a services tab.find the check box to "hide" all microsoft services.then what remains on the revised list are third party services that the operating system doesn't need.you can disable all of them then reboot and see if your o.s. performs better.incidentally, you may want to jot down what services you disabled because the trick will be for you to do due diligence and figure out with startups and services should be enable or remain disabled.db`...> DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - @Hotmail.com "share the nirvana mann" - dbZen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > >
