WebDAV - only seeing some files
We have a WebDAV server (RedHat Enterprise Linux + Apache + mod_dav) that we use with our mostly Macintosh clients. We just added a Windows 7 (Home Premium x64) user, and while he can connect and browse the WebDAV export mostly fine, he's only seeing a fraction of the files on the server. The (UNIX) permissions, ownership, etc., for the files he can see, and those he can't, are identical. He can successfully create files locally and save (or copy) them to the WebDAV share (and we see the PUT requests in the Apache access logs), and the files are created properly on the WebDAV server and our Mac users can see the files immediately, but his Windows 7 machine never lists those files in Explorer or in, e.g., the "open" dialog for his email client. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen. We have automatic detection of proxy servers turned off in his Internet Explorer configuration, and it made no difference. I've hit the F5 key until I'm afraid it's going to break, and the files never appear, either the newly created files nor the remaining files he can't see. (E.g., in one directory, with 497 folders and files, he sees 55 items -- two of the ~2 dozen folders, and 53 files.) Not even sure where to try to start troubleshooting this! Any suggestions? Many thanks, Dave

Hi, You may refer to this hotfix. Some files under a WebDAV folder are not listed in Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2555258 Kim Zhou TechNet Community Support

We applied that hotfix, the problem persisted. We rebooted, the problem persisted. We tried changing FileAttributesLimitInBytes, FileNotFoundCacheLifeTimeInSec, etc., the problem persists. We turned off automatic proxy discovery in iexplorer.exe, the problem persists. I setup a fresh Windows 7 Home Premium virtual machine, ran Windows Update, applied the hotfix, the problem persists. Is WebDAV on Windows 7 just fundamentally broken? If we can't fix this ASAP we're going to buy the new user an iMac and implement a "no Wintel" purchasing policy firm-wide... Macs have their own issues but never anything this opaque!

When I hit "F5" to refresh a folder listing on a Windows 7 Home Premium client (that shows 0 files/folders in that folder, though it contains 44 items visible on every other operating system we've tried), I see (in /var/log/httpd/ssl_access_log) PROPFIND requests: 192.168.246.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:35:21 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery HTTP/1.1" 301 352 192.168.246.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:35:21 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery/ HTTP/1.1" 207 859 192.168.246.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:35:21 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery HTTP/1.1" 301 352 192.168.246.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:35:22 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery/ HTTP/1.1" 207 67678 192.168.246.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:35:22 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery/desktop.ini HTTP/1.1" 404 320 On a Mac, I get simile PROPFIND requests, and then a slew of GET ._<filename> requests... 192.168.266.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:33:08 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery/ HTTP/1.1" 207 624 192.168.266.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:33:08 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/ HTTP/1.1" 207 614 192.168.266.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:33:08 -0700] "PROPFIND /Anastasia/Discovery/ HTTP/1.1" 207 37600 192.168.266.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:33:08 -0700] "GET /Anastasia/Discovery/._ProductionLog.xlsx HTTP/1.1" 304 - 192.168.266.168 - - [12/Oct/2012:15:33:08 -0700] "GET /Anastasia/Discovery/._Binder1.pdf HTTP/1.1" 304 -

Hi, 1. You can try to disable the firewall on the virtual machine and move the Win7 client and the file server to the same subnet. 2. Update Webclnt.dll to the latest version. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2732597 Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
