Why TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Local Service is always set to Automatic?
When I checked Local Services in my system, I always see TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Local service is set to Automatic from the time i installed Windows Operating system (any windows OS). I want to know why it is set to Automatic. If any application is depented on that service why can't it turn on when it eneded and turn off after the task completes? If it is importent to start that service, why it is need? What programs by default use that service from first use of Windows OS?

1. Compatibility. 2. The applications (if not very explicitly checking for it to be enabled, which I highly doubt) are not aware of this service, they are only communicating on the network layer and has no knowledge about the service. Applications could be written to account for this service but that is highly unlikely to happen, and the fact all legacy applications will be updated is even more unlikely. 3. Compatibility. The basic reason for it to be enabled is to make network communication work, or should I say, to not break network communications in most environments.Blogging about Windows for IT pros at www.theexperienceblog.com
