Why can I ping a computer that is turned off

I have a computer that is turn off, better yet, it is stored for about a month on a shelf. Does not have any connection to any thing. I can ping this computer on name and on IP address.

Why does this computer respond to pings?

I checked DNS, no double IP address.

Thanks

Have a look in your DHCP scope and find the IP address. Is client name the same as the one you find in DNS?

best way to determine this issue is looking for the mac address, if you enable to check it within the network you can determine whether that PC is on or completely off or somebody using the same user name or randomly but same IP (maybe DHCP)

Is this your home network or do you have a domain?

* If its a domain, go to your DNS server - do you have a static record for the IP/computer entry?

* If its a standalone computer and no domain, do you have a static record in your hosts file?

You say that even tho your computer is offline, you still get a ping with that IP address AND the DNS name?  If there was a duplicate device, I can see the IP giving back a ping but not the DNS name

One other thing, have you tried doing a simple ipconfig /flushdns and then ipconfig /registerdns to flush the DNS cache?

Lastly, if you have a bunch of Windows machines on your network, what you could do if you're still getting a ping from this IP/box - simply try RDP'ing to the IP and or computer name.  If its some live box with a duplicate, once you've logged in, you can see in the Properties what the computer name is to track it down from there.

Hi,

If you still could get the reply, it must be the duplicate device like other said or network card active. Since this is impossible if the computer completely disconnect from power. Please powered off that computer completely to check the result.

As Leif-Arne suspected the DHCP IP belongs to another device then the same IP in the DNS. In the DHCP the IP belongs to an Android phone and the same IP in DNS belongs to the computer that respond to ping when turned off.

How is it possible that DHCP and DNS use the same IP for different devices?
How can I solve this problem?

I am using Windows SBS 2008 server

Thanks

You can configure the DHCP server to update DNS on behalf of its clients.
