Why does Outlook Express continually request for the folders to be compacted all of a sudden?
My Outlook Express 6 has all of a sudden started to request for its folders to be compacted. No matter how often I compact the folders, it keeps wanting to do this. I deleted about 25% of my stored emails, so I now have much fewer emails stored than I had for years. It still keeps requesting compacting. Why??????2 people need an answerI do too

If you have Service Pack three installed, you have the latest OE fixes. If you do not have SP3, you should get it and then see if you still have problems. Here is how the prompt for compacting works (it has absolutely nothing to do with deleting your messages or haw many messages you have). There is a registry value Compact Check Count that when it goes over 100, you will be prompted with the compress DB message from one of two sources. HKCU\Identities\{51909A0B-63EE-4EB3-A9A2-7CFA23C1ADCF}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0Every time you exit OE (not when you open), it increases the counter by one increment. When it gets to 101, the next time you close OE you will be asked to compress. If you are using Windows Desktop Search, it will also bump the counter every time it runs which is usually on every reboot. If you are using both OE and WDS, the counter will get bumped more frequently - every time you close OE and every time you reboot. If you are not using OE and only using WDS, that will still bump the counter, so when the counter gets to 100, WDS will ask you to compress the messages (even if you are not using OE) on the next reboot anyway. This is because WDS is set up by default to search the OE database whether your are using OE or not. No matter how the counter is increased, if you are using at least one of those two, you will see this message sooner or later. But you can stop it when you understand it.You can compress the DB when prompted which will reset the counter to 0, you can edit the registry and reset the counter by hand to buy some time, if you are only using WDS you can tell WDS not to ever look at the OE database, you can just not use OE or WDS (like me) and/or you can suppress the message completely even when the counter does go over 100 no matter how it got there.Uninstall Windows (Desktop) Search or Remove Outlook Express from the Indexing option in WDS:Start, Settings, Control Panel, Indexing Options, Modify, clear the Outlook Express box, OK, Close the check box for Outlook Express If you compact and are soon asked again to compress and know that there is no way the counter could have gotten to 101, you have some other problem, so do this: Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/They can be uninstalled later if desired.
