Why is network discovery so slow....
Clicking on Network in explorer is very slow. On my home computer, the green bar appears top of screen takes quite a while to find computers (a minute or two). I only have 3 computers! On the corporate computers at work, it takes about 1 hour to complete and finds computers in remote areas before it has completed finding computers in the local subnet. Surely it should be able to find local computers quickly. And then if you accidentally close explorer and go back in again, it starts all over again. All this started with Vista and hasnt been fixed in win 7. If you know the name of the computer and type it in, it comes up straight away. In XP, network browsing worked really really well and was quite fast. Seems the moving from NetBIOS to whatever else it has done now doesnt work too well... Does anyone know or have any ideas as to : 1. why computers in remote subnets are appearing and can this be stopped? (perhaps from WINS???) 2. why does it take so long? thank you!

I remember the problem when I moved to Vista a few years ago and I had the same problem with Windows 7 - until today. Turn off the file sync. If your network contains shares with a large number of files, your computer will copy all the shared files to your computer and whenever you click on the network it will try and sync those files. From the start menu seach for "sync". You should get the Control panel Sync Center. Click on Manage offline file and make sure the offline files are disabled. You will have to reboot.
