Why is there a 5 minute delay on XP reboot with write-cache disabled
We have recently disabled the write cache on our XP workstationsbecause we removed our UPSes.with the write cache disabled, there is an additional 5 minute (almost precisely) delay introduced after the screen displays the pop-up "Windows is shutting down", and just before it actually shuts down and restarts. During this time there is extensive Disk activity. If write cache is enabled the time for the same period is only 30 seconds. The applications are shut down and there are essentially no outstanding writes (other than OS) to the disks. The workstations are HP RP5700, Intel Core 2 2.13Ghz, 2GB ram. Each system has 2 disks, ST3160815's.The Workstations are running XP pro V2002 Sp2. Can anyone explain what is causing this?If this is a hard-coded delay, is there a way to reduce the timeout to 1 minute?thanks,Ole Jensen1 person needs an answerI do too
