Image: http://i45.tinypic.com/x211t1.png Do you guys get that when you select a .exe? Is it normal? Is there a way to change it? reset it? its pretty ugly..

I see the same icon when I select a .exe in Windows Explorer, so I beleive it's the standard icon WE displays when an .exe is selected. I don't think the icon displayed in the toolbar when a given file is selected is user-configurable.

i just scanned the registry to see how that icon is being generated. here's what i gather. first of all, the icons on the explorer menubar buttons are simply default icons. there are already very handsome hi-res images elsewhere in the explorer view. secondly, those default icons do vary, depending on the filetype you've highlighted. for example, click an .ini or .ico file and check its icon on the button. scanning the registry, you'll find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\inifile\shell\open\command references Notepad HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\icofile\shell\open\command references Windows Photo Viewer HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\exefile\shell\open\command references "%1" %* the .ini and .ico files produce exactly the default icon you'd expect, considering the referenced program. but .exe is special. look at that weird construct %1 %*. what is that? so, the default exe icon is somehow getting widgeted in there by explorer. (anybody's guess). lol. it's a big step forward from vista. you should check what it's got.

I agree Blue Melon, an .exe file will not show an .exe generic icon. All shortcuts will show a generic .exe icon. Reg files and notepad files seem to work. Example: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\cmdfile\DefaultIcon %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll,-68 also HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\cmdfile\DefaultIcon %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll,-68 but the explorer toolbar does not use this icon.
