Win7 Pro My Documents Redirection
Hi. Im hoping someone can help me with some advice or guidance. I have a Small Business Server 2003 domain with a few users. I replaced on of the users older computers with a new system with Windows 7 Professional (x86). All users on the domain have their MY DOCUMENT directory redirected by the SBS to a folder on the server. When I replaced the users old computer, I removed it from the domain, then added the new Win7Pro system and added it to the domain no problems. I then logged the user on and moved any data from the old systems hard drive to the new users profile on the new system und C:\USERS\username. What I notice is that the user when she is logged into the domain account does not have a MY DOCUMENT directory under her profile on C:\USERS\username. She does have all of her MY DOCUMENTS data and it shows under the MY DOCUMENT LIBRARY as well. Her personal drive space which is mapped to her U:\ drive has her MY DOCUMENTS directory and that is correctly where the SBS folder redirection has the MY DOCUMENT data redirected to. So my first question is whether I have a potential problem in that the data does not seem to reside in her profile on the local C drive in addition to the redirected location. How would I go about re-establishing the data on the local C drive in her profile correctly? I noticed all of this since she is having a very particular problem. She uses HP scan software that comes with the HP all-in-one printer. She sets up a scan configuration to save the scanned file in PDF in a MY SCANS directory which is under her MY DOCUMENTS directory. When she sets up the configuration, it works correctly for a short time and then after some time, when used again, the scan software indicates it saves the file in her MY SCANS directory under her MY DOCUMENTS directory but when she goes to look, its not there. She has setup the scan configuration to the MY SCANS directory using both a hard mapped drive (U:\MY DOCUMENTS\MY SCANS) and also using UNC to point to the directly but to no avail. Im grasping at straws here, thinking that the HP scan software is not able to properly obtain access to the directory in what would be a re-directed folder only? So the second question is whether anyone would have any idea as to whether to believe the scan problem saving to her MY DOCUMENTS\MY SCANS directory might be related to not having a proper MY DOCUMENTS source directory in her profile? I would like to correct the MY DOCUMENTS directory in any case, as I believe if she has a problem reaching the server, she would then not have access to her document data at all and I believe that should be corrected. Im hoping that might also lead me to find the solution to the scanning problem. I would welcome any ideas and can clarify better if I have left anything out of my explanation. Thank you,

First, if the Documents folder is redirected to a server using folder redirection it is perfectly normal for it not showing up in c:\users\<username> so you have nothing to worry about there. It is not uncommon for applications to have trouble saving to network locations but I would start by making sure to have the latest version of the HP software. Then I would try setting a local directory just to try if the problem exist then as well and third, are there any error messages when the user no longer can scan to the U: och UNC path of the redirected share?

Stenis - thanks. The scan software appears to work correctly, however the file is simply not saved and there are no error messages indicating that a problem occurred. The HP scan software does work for other network drive locations and will consistently save to those, it just fails to the redirected MY DOCUMENT directory, and only after a little time after the scan configuration is setup to save there. The software is the absolute latest version downloaded directly from the HP web site on installation. The all-in-one is past end-of-life and the software indicates it supports VISTA. It seems to work in all respects except for saving to the redirected MY DOCUMENTS directory. On that note, how would I re-create the local user profile MY DOCUMENTS directory? Your post seems to indicate that its normal not to have a local drive MY DOCUMENTS directory, however that is not what was the case under XP when it was first configured? How would the user have access to their data if the server were unavailable and the user logged on with cached credentials?Im hesitant just to simply create a MY DOCUMENTS folder under the users profile directory? If I turn OFF folder re-direction for the user on the server, how do I get the local MY DOCUMENTS folder back? Thanks for any further suggestions or help.

When you use folder redirection it automatically activate offline files which makes the " my documents" folder available even when the server is offline or the computer does not have an active connection to the server. If you turn off the folder redirection the "my documents" folder will automatically be made local again. Something you could try is to run the HP application in Vista compatibility mode and see if that works better. Right click the application choose Properties and then try settings the comptaibility to Windows Vista. I guess the problem is something else though but it is worth a try.

Stenis,Thanks for the suggested cure on the folder redirection. Ill see if turning it off brings back the local folder. On the HP Scan software, I already tried both the Vista and XP Pro SP3 variations of the compatability mode. I suspect its the lousy HP program. The software gave me nothing but problems under XP, so I guess I should expect better from it in Win7. I think the solution here is not to use the HP software. Thanks for the suggestions and information.
