Win7 Starter and VPN
Hello, I purchased a netbook with Win7 Starter installed. After I have done the initial setup, I tried to set up a PPTP VPN connection to my workplace. I don't see any way of configuring a PPTP VPN connection!!! What can I do? Is there a module that I can install to enable the Starter to be able to PPTP? Thanks in advance.

Thanks but the Windows 7 "Starter" in my new netbook has the "Dialup and VPN connection..." is greyed out. Cannot establish a VPN connection at all! I know the Win7 Pro does because I have set it up in my work laptop with Win7 Pro. But I just couldn't set it up in Win7 Starter.

Thanks again. I made sure that th "Remote Access Connection Manager" is running (Started) and all it's dependencies, if any. And I am logged in as administrator. The "Dial-up and VPN" is grayed out. I'm going to install the Cisco VPN client. Hopefully it will work. You see, I ride a bike and it's lighter for a netbook to lag around in the motorcycle bag than a laptop.

Yes, it is true. Try the CISCO VPN client and tell me the result. There is options that are able to use on certain windows 7 editions and not on others. Maybe it is the same case for the VPN config. I think the CISCO VPN client will work fine. Best regards.

Jusk a remark. It is that PPTP is specific for Microsoft infrastructures, I don't think that it is supported by CISCO. Best regards.

I installed the Cisco VPN Client and it is working in my netbook with Win7 Starter Edition. Wow, MS really trimmed down the connectivity in the Starter Edition. Even the option in Wireless LAN to connect "... even if not broadcasting.. " is no longer present. I have to let my Wireless router at home broadcast the SSID because my netbook cannot connect without a detected SSID, even if the profile is already set up!!! Why are netbooks limited to just 1Gig of memory?? These are very devices that can really be a good productivity tool for IT support people. Oh well.

I was going to connect to our ISA server with PPTP but since Cisco VPN client works, I'll connect to our Cisco Firewall/VPN Gateway.

No, thanks. I'm sure that link will not work for me. I am okay with the Cisco VPN client.

ah okay good for you. I think it was a problem with the edition which does not enable to you to use PPTP connection. In all the cases, the softwares I gave would have solved a such problem. Best regards.
