How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issueshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602 The updates that are installing at shutdown are the updates that you have already approved for installation. Apparently not all of the approved updates have downloaded, therefore only the updates that have already downloaded are available for installation at shutdown. You can check in the windowsupdate.log to see what has already downloaded and installed.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093or you can manually go to the Windows Update site and check the history of installed updates.TaurArian [MVP] 2005-2010 - Update Services

TaurArian Thanks for your reply, apologies for taking so long to get back to it. However it does not really answer my question. "The updates that are installing at shutdown are the updates that you have already approved for installation." Not so. I have not been notified of any updates to give or withhold approval. Nevertheless ocassionally on shutdown one or more updates are installed. I have looked at the Windows update file document 902093 and looked at my windows update log can see that it records all updates that have happened and that have been downloaded but it is in a very messy format and picking out the downloads is not easy. Given that the settings for Windows Update allow the setting download but let me choose when to install them, there ought to be a more user friendly way of accessing a list of the fixes that have been downloaded, a description of what they do and a check box to clear them for installation, but it appears that such does not exist making selecting of this option unusable. Regards, The Evil One.

When updates are downloaded an ICON appears in the system tray. Click this icon when you are ready to install. Are you accessing Microsoft Windows update site? If so, all you need to do is search for updates using CUSTOM, check the boxes for the updates you want to download/install and click review and install updates. Also, have you selected a time to install updates?
