Win 7 & Server 2008 R2 - Easy File Transfer
Hi.Windows 7 has the easy file transer wizzard. Since server 2008 r2 is so similiar, does anyone know if it has it too?I have a server 2008 r2. I need to change to a totally new and unrelated motherboard... does it have a transfer wizzard like windows 7 so that i can keep my user accounts, computer accounts, permissions, shares, settings, etc? This may not be the right forum and i apologize if that's the case. I just thought that since the 2 os's are based on each other... maybe they would work similiarily.Any help or, if you can point me to a better forum or a 3rd party utility, i would be very appreciative. Thanks!

No it doesn't. But do you have Windows Server Backup installed? If not, just go toServer Manager, Features and add Windows Server Backup (and command line tools if desired). Once installed, just go to Administrative Tools, Windows Server Backup, then right click Windows Server Backup (Local), Select Backup Once and go from there. Mine was 133 Gigs and I hooked up an external hard drive for my backup. That way by selecting certain options you can do a full recovery if it becomes necessary. In your case, the problems you'll encounter are drivers, so once that's resolved you'll be up and running but having a full backup never hurts. You could also invest in Symantec's Ghost Solution 2.5 if you want to image or any other similar product. But free always works for me. Little more work, but what the hay. MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

Thank you for your follow up. Shortly after posting this, i found the Server 2008 forums and i posed the same question there. So if this thread needs to be deleted for being in the wrong spot, i understand.cdobbs, thanks for your answer. It seems easy enough to follow. My real "concern" is that since this is my only server, swapping the motherboard to a totally new brand of board, i'm 99% confident that this will require a complete reinstall of the OS due to driver issues.I don't have Ghost Console but i'm guessing it too allows a complete backup with the exception of drivers.I will try Windows Backup and cross my fingers that it will backup up everything "except" drivers. Thanks again and once again, sorry for the server post in this forum. It just that when i was looking for a different board, everyone kept telling me, "It doesn't matter. Windows 7 is based on Server 2008 therefore, you can use all Windows 7 drivers on your Server 2008 OS." That just doesn't seem right.But... if in the off chance it was, i was hoping that it too might have some kind of Easy File Transfer Wizzard, the reason for the post.Ok, once again, thanks!
