Win 7 Pro 64 - desktop icons all black then disappear, leaving only text
Installed 9 updates. Rebooted and when the icons on my Desktop are black boxes. Then after a few seconds they disappear, leaving only the text under the icon. If I right click on the Desktop, View then Large Icons, they show up but as soon as I change to medium they mostly disappear and when I choose small the completely disappear again. I've tried several remedies I've found via Google. Created a new Admin account - icons okay. Renamed C:\Users\accountname\Local\Microsoft\Explorer to Explorer-xxx then logged on my normal account again, no change. Ran cleanmgr, no help. System Restore to before the updates were installed, no change. Any suggestions appreciated. I need to keep my current account name as it's the same one I use on all 3 systems for sharing files and folders. Win 7 Pro X64 - new clean install. Solved - deleted C:\Users\myaccount\AppData\Local\Iconcache.db, rebooted and all is well again. Even reinstalled the 9 updates. Got Acronis installed and made a image backup so I can get back to this point if needed.Rich

How's Windows 7 seem to beworking on that 370? I have a 470 is why I ask.I have been running Windows 7 in virtual machines, and on a Macbook, while my main workstation (470) remains on Vista x64 for the time being until I'm sure I can do everything necessary using the new OS.Do you use the onboard SATA Raid-0? With Vista I had to use an XP x64 driver to get that to work, though it's been rock solid stable.-Noel

Hi Noel. RC1 32bit worked perfectly, never a problem. No raid though. The problem I described above has returned when I turned on the computer this morning. I can clear it up by deleting Iconcache.db until I reboot then the problem is back so there is something else causing the problem. Still looking for a permanent answer. Rich

Well, Iimagine the rendering of icons on the desktop must involve the video card... What model do you have? I assume you've updated the drivers. What color depth are you using for the desktop? If 32 bit, try 24 bit (or vice versa) to see if the problem persists.-Noel

I don't see how this can be video card/driver related since it worked up until I did a windows update and received 9 updates. None of them w3ere hardware updates so I think that was a coincidence. I finally gave up and used Acronis to restore to an hour or so after I did the initial 64 bit install. This cost me several hours of software to install but at least I have my desktop back to normal. I'm back to where I should be and all is well so far, all software and data installed or restored. I'm in the process of doing another Acronis backup so I can save the current state to restore to if needed. It's also possible I caused this myself by using one of the registry tweaks I found to get rid of the shortcut arrow in icons, though if that were true you would think it would be bad immediately, not several hours and reboots later. Also, it's working fine now with the same registry tweak applied. I am going to install the update for my nVidia Quadro FX 3400/4400. Maybe that will help, who knows.Rich

All appears to be well now. Not sure if the updated Nvidia driver helped or using a program called FxVisor64 which makes it easy, and apparently safe, to mess with the arrows. It's available here: http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/14525d1248749164-shortcut-arrow-fxvisor64.zip This is a direct download link. The page I got it from is here: Shortcut Arrow - Vista Forums - has both the 32 and 64 bit versions.Rich
