Win 7 Startup System Recovery: Error codes 0x2 and 0x490
Hello, I am running Windows 7 on an HP dv5 laptop. The laptop froze all of a sudden and I had to do a hard reboot (with the power button). Now when I start up the laptop (whether in Safe mode or Normal) I cannot make it passed the System Recovery tool into Windows. I keep getting the Error codes 0x2 and 0x490 and it says it can't find the system file eqlilkriq.sys, which I have a feeling is not a valid Win 7 system file after googling it and finding nothing. I tried getting into MSConfig from Command Prompt in the System Recover->Advanced options menu, but it said I did not have valid privileges, even though I'm running as Admin. Any ideas? I can access all the files in the HDD through cmd, but I can't boot up so I assume the HDD is not corrupt. Thank you in advance.

Have you tried to repair you operating system install? If no then try it. If yes, then you can try to retrieve your data from the disk and re-install your OS. Best regards.

Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue? Unfortunately, there is not diagnostic tool to fix this issue. I suggest that you set your computer to clean boot to check if any of the Third party services running the background could be causing this issue. Here are the steps to set the computer to clean boot: How to perform clean boot on the computer running Windows Vista 1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. 2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup. 3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. 4. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. 5. Click OK. 6. When you are prompted, click Restart. 7. After the computer starts, check if the issue is fixed. If your issue is resolved after performing Clean Boot, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 If you can isolate one service that is selected when the problem occurs, that service is the one that causes the problem. If you determine that a service is causing the problem Normal startup mode following the steps under ‘Reset the computer to start as usual’.

Thank you all for your advice. MS helper - I tried running restore through the Win 7 installation CD to no avail. solution_provider - The problem is that I cannot get into windows so cannot type MSCONFIG in the Start Search box. I tried running MSConfig from command prompt but it said I did not have the correct privileges even though I was running as Admin. What I ended up doing was backing up and doing a fresh install, which isn't a real solution to this problem.

If the repair operation gave no result, then you can try to retrieve your data from the disk and re-install your OS. I don't think there is other possible resolution. Best regards.
