Win 7 licenses and new hardware in my sys
Mornin' Folks,
I've got a legit copy of Win 7, built my own sys. However, I want/need to replace some hardware and don't want to do so if when I reload from the Win 7 disk I get some form of msg. that won't allow me to do so. Don't have alot of $$ (to be exact
none to be wasted getting new equip and the aforementioned scenario). Your help in this would be most appreciated.
Thanks for any, and or all help
Horatio

What type of Windows License do you have?
If it's an OEM one, then you can replace everything but the motherboard.
If it's a Full Retail license, then everything is up for grabs - but you may have to do either a repair install, or a clean install, to get it to accept a new motherboard.

Noel,
You can help me here with the definitions, OEM/Full Retail. I bought Win 7 (its own case/cover) when I bought ALL the other parts to assemble my current sys. Its(Win 7) legit...I had to install from the disk after I built the sys, case, screws,
mobo, mem, hd's, vid card, optical drives(2) dvd's, sata cords, etc. You get the picture.
Thanks for the reply

Post an MGADiag report - it'll tell us exactly what you have :)
To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop -
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

Noel,
Thanks, figgered it out. I can rebuild a new sys and no licensing issues....If you could though sir, confirm my thoughts please:
1. OEM = bought sys with OS installed
2. Full Retail = Just what I bought...Brand new, in case from a comp shop.
Thanks,
Horation

Yep - it's an OEM System Builder license - which means that you can change anything except the motherboard (you can even change the CPU, it the motherboard will accept an upgrade).
From the BIOS date, it looks like a reasonably recent board - check with the manufacturer to see what CPU's it'll accept, and whether it's worth attempting an upgrade.
FWIW, this it the reason that OEM licenses should not be sold to end-users - often they get installed as a cheap way to upgrade a system, and the system then proceeds to die a short time later. When that happens, the user is faced with having to replace
both the board/computer and the License at the same time. A retail license would have avoided the second (and subsequent) license cost.
