Windows-7 Memory usage
I have 4Gb of memory on my PC (32-bit) but Windows-7 only repots 2GB. I thought that was an XP limitation. Is there any way to get Windows-7 to use all the memory

TOF - The limitations on memory in Windows (or for that matter, most 32 Bit OS's) is a limitation of mathematics. 32 bits limits you to a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Windows uses part of that 4 GB for system overhead - and if you're video card doesn't have discrete memory (that is, uses part of the SYSTEM'S memory and not it's own) it's even less. Havinga separate video card that has it's own discrete memory would certainly help somewhat - but the most you're likely to see is somewhere around 3.25 GB. Check your motherboard's manual for specifics as to how much it can support and any settings you can tweak to make it so.Since I don't know what CPU you've got, it's impossible for me to tell you if there's a way to make use of the full amount. If you have a 64 bit compatible processor that conforms to the AMD 64 (or later) or Intel IA64 specifications, then you can install the Windows 7 64 bit RC. The 64 bit version has a different memory allocation scheme that allows you to take better advantage of 4 GB (or more) of RAM.

Thanks for the reply. I have an AMD 9950 CPUand a GigabyteGA-MA-78GM-US2H motherboard (which can support much more memory)it has on-board ATI 3200 graphics which uses 512Mb of my memory, so I was expecting Windows to see about 3 - 3.5Gb. That is more than enough for anything I am going to use this PC for.

TOF - Hmm.. Yup.. That would qualify as an AMD 64 compliant chip.Your expectations are indeed within reason. Certainly within the realm of reason. Now then, do you have your system set up to dual boot into Vista or XP? There's another thread on this board with similar issues. According to the thread, those with a dual boot into Vista report they're seeing all of the RAM installed on their system but the RC reports something below that amount. The difference, they are using the 64 bit version. It also seems that the Beta didn't have this issue either. So it may be just a bug in the reporting code in both versions...If you open the Task Manager and click on Properties - you should see the full amount of RAM installed. How much does it report on your system?

Today is obviously a new day - Windows now shows 2.813GB - I can live with that given that the graphics takes 512Mb.Regards,TOF
