Windows7 crash
Hi, I have problem with windows7. I am using this windows7 since last 2-3 weeks. The last time i used the windows it asked me to download the updates, and while shutting down the windows it was just installing the updates. But next morning when i tried to start the windows it was starting properly but after successful startup it was just showing on blank black page. On this blank page at the right bottom there was mentioned as "Windows7 for testing purpose only Build 7000." I thought that may be the error in restarting or anything else, but even after restarting the windows same thing happen. I tried to launch windows with safe mode, but the same thing was happening in the safe mode as well. Then finally i tried in safe mode in command prompt but still no change. But in the safe mode with command prompt there is link of send feedback. With this link i managed to open the help section but to my surprise there was no topics in the help category.... This made me crazy. Then with the help of command prompt somehow I managed to open my computer. I tried to open some files, some were opening and some were not(that may be because of safe mode). But i guess everything was working fine. Then i tried to restore the windows using the command rstrui.exe, but it was also in vain. So final thing is that my windows was crashed, but i didn't know why. One more thing i would like to add here is i am using windows xp on the same machine but it is on another drive, so i don't think this will create any issues for windows7. So i was left with the only option that reinstall the windows. I reinstalled the windows and now still working using this. Any inputs or suggestions to this may save time/headache if it happens next time. Thanks & Regards, Sushilkumar Jagdale

Sounds like something that got updated during that last Windows Update trashed something. It could have easily been a video driver given you were having problems with video. Should you do another Windows Update and something like this happens again, you could try the "In place upgrade" method instead of a full reinstall. You can do this by inserting the install DVD into your optical drive, booting from it and selecting the Upgrade path (as opposed to a clean install). Install Windows 7 on top of the existing Windows 7 drive and it will refresh the OS without deleting your data or forcing you to reinstall your applications. It should go fairly quickly - depending on what you've got installed.

Sounds like the files that were downloaded didn't completely download and install correctly. Suggestion would be to do is 'create a store' point by clicking on start and typing in the search box "restore point" before doing any updates this ensures that any further problems can at least be rectified and also do a full backup before going too far with testing of win7.To err is human to really foul things up it takes a computer.

Hi, The issue may occur if some system components are not replaced properly when Windows Update, or some Registry parts are not correct. The reason can be your security programs. If the issue occurs again, you could try to repair with In-place Upgrade as Wolfies suggestion. However, if you could not even open the program after you boot in Windows, you may boot with the Windows 7 beta DVD, go into Win RE, and do System Restore. Generally after you install updates, restore points will be created. Note that do not boot into the other system after the issue occurs, because, otherwise the restore points of Windows 7 beta will be erased automatically.Arthur Xie - MSFT
