Windows 7, Internet Connection Sharing and IPv6 Router Advertisments Problem
There seems to be a problem in Windows when you enable Internet Connection Sharing on a network adaptor and then remove the network adaptor that ICS was enabled on, then Windows will still send IPv6 router advertisments for the network adaptor that you removed. Whats more, disabling router advertisments doesn't work, Windows turns them back on automatically after boot. Even if you remove the network adaptor from device manager (by showing non present devices) this still doesn't fix things. The only ways to fix this is to either disable IPv6 completely, or enable ICS on another network adaptor and then disable it. This was a problem while setting up for a LAN party. Connectivity was being lost in the IPv6 network and it turned out that certain systems were advertising themselves as a route. After investigating, it turned out systems which had previously had ICS enabled but not being disabled prior to them being disconnected and then connected to the LAN. It is also pretty trivial to reproduce this. Enable ICS and then remove the adaptor, that is it. Since the fix is fairly trivial too (enable ICS and then disable it again on a network adaptor in the system) I am wondering about what is the best way to report this as a problem. It took a while to figure out what the problem was, and you can't expect just any end user to be able to figure out a problem like this. I am guessing Windows paid support would be the best place to take this, but I would rather not do that if there is another way. This is a signature Any samples given are not meant to have error checking or show best practices. Hi Crescens2k, I would say that the support will be the best way to start the resolution process. I thought so, but it doesn't hurt to ask. This is a signature Any samples given are not meant to have error checking or show best practices. They are meant to just illustrate a point.
