Windows 7 - Wireless - LAN OK - No internet connection
I have HP 5310m laptops with fresh installs of Windows 7 professional. I am able to access the wireless network on a Cisco SA-520w WPA2 which DHCP is given by a Windows Server 2008 RC2. With XP, wireless works fine, no problems. With Windows 7, network shares and printers are accessible but no internet connectivity. With the wireless, I can join and dis-join the laptop with the domain. IP config shows correct settings. I can ping the firewall. There are no programs installed other than Windows 7 with all updates, not even an anti-virus program (it's a completely fresh install with only Windows 7 updates). I have disabled the registry for DHCP broadcast to no avail. IPv6 is disabled. Safe mode with networking gives the same problem. Wired connection works fine. Uninstalled/Re-installed wireless drivers with Windows Update and HP's downloaded drivers does not resolve the issue. Windows 7 troubleshooter says it cannot resolve the issue that to contact support. What is it that I am missing?

Hi, To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following steps. 1. Please assure the proxy settings are correct. (If there is.) 2. Temporarily disable group policy on the problematic Windows 7 machine for a test. 3. Temporarily disable firewall to check the result. If the issue persists, please type “IPCONFIG /ALL” in Command Console and post the result here for research. Thanks, Novak

1. Proxy Settings are set to auto. 2. I do not believe there is a group policy. 3. Turning off the firewall yields same results. Hi, Based on the above IP information, I suggest you perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Use other static DNS a. Click "Start" menu, type "ncpa.cpl" (without quotation marks) in Search Box and press "OK". b. Select your local network. c. Click Properties, then select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). d. Click Properties. e. In the Internet Protocol window, let's change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.222.222 f. Click 'OK' twice to complete the modification. If the issue persists, please repeat the steps and change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.220.220. 2. Put the machine in another Wireless network and check whether it can access Internet normally. If so, I suggest you replace another encryption type for a test, such as WEP. 3. Reset WinSock a. Click Start, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". b. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. c. Please enter the following command, and press Enter. Netsh winsock reset d. A message stating "Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog" will appear. Please restart the computer. If the issue persists, please collect the following log file for research. Collect the Netmon trace ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab … d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to access Internet again. When it failed, go to step g. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me. Thanks, Novak

Resetting winsock worked. Thank you very much! I do have a couple of questions: 1. What's the difference between resetting winsock and flush/registering dns? 2. I had entered in the static DNS 208.67.220.220 which didn't let me connect to the internet. I then reset winsock and rebooted and internet worked. I then set DNS to automatically obtain from server which killed the internet and then I reset the winsock again and works. Why is this? On XP machines, I can switch back and forth without having to reset winsock. 3. I get the feeling that users of these Windows 7 laptops will have to reset winsock again and again. How do I prevent this? *Note* - all this testing is being done remotely. I have to VPN tunnel in to connect to the laptop which is only connected to the network through wireless. I am stating this to show that internal wireless connection works well for the laptop, just no internet connection.

Hi, Thank you for your reply on this case and I’m glad to hear the above solution is useful. In computing, the Windows Sockets API, which was later shortened to Winsock, is a technical specification that defines how Windows network software should access network services, especially TCP/IP. It defines a standard interface between a Windows TCP/IP client application (such as an FTP client or a web browser) and the underlying TCP/IP protocol stack. This issue can occur by corrupted Winsock. Regarding the “flush/registering DNS”, the command just flushes your DNS cache and registers your DNS. When you modifying DNS to automatically obtaining, I suspect that it may restore WinSock settings and you have to reset it again. At this stage, I suggest you keep the current situation and restart the machine for several times to check whether Internet can be accessed via Wireless network now. Usually, you need not to reset it again and again. For more information about WinSock, please refer to the following article: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/winsock.htm Thanks, Novak

Rebooting brings the error back again. Local Network okay but No Internet Access. I tried resetting winsock and the error still occurs. I guess it was a glitch? It worked for a day or so... I know the wireless works on other networks. I brought it home right before I put it back where it is. Logged in as if I were on the domain and it allowed me to connect to my wireless network. Do you suppose I have corrupt files? I haven't done anything on this computer other than install Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, Windows Update with all Windows file updates, and join it to the domain hosted by Windows Server 2008 R2.

So it seems nobody's listening anymore. The wireless comes and goes as it pleases. It always starts as no internet access and depending on how lucky I am, it may take a minute or up to 2 hours before I have internet access. Rebooting, winsock reset, disable/enable wireless adapter, re-installing wireless adapter and re-installing Windows 7 does not help. These are brand new laptops so I would not like to believe it is a hardware issue when it's happening on all 10 of them. I do not want to set it up with static DNS because once the laptops leave the network, the user will have to set it to automatically obtain which then when they return to the network they would have to set it as static again. And I really should not have to do this.

So I tried everything and it seems to not want to function correctly. Here is my network recording http://cid-562d3ac8c3b4499e.office.live.com/embedicon.aspx/.Public/test.cap

Hi Check the DNS settings it need to point (or auto obtain) an address that can resolve Internet connection. I do not know where the Internet comes from, but if it is though the Server and the server is the agent that gives the DHCP, it might be that its IP is also DNS and it can Not resolve an Internet connection. I am unsure if that is the problem. The ipconfig settings are the same for wired and wireless because the settings are coming from Server 2008 R2 and the wired has no issues whatsoever. Hi Mouda, I’m sorry for delay to response you. Based on your description, I understand that the Wireless network can work fine on other Wireless network. This can eliminate the system cause. If the issue is caused by system area, the Wireless network will also disconnect sometimes. Based on current situation, I suggest you upgrade the Wireless router’s firmware and reload its settings. Thanks, Novak

Great! Your suggestion worked. I have just bought a new Dell laptop with Windows 7, and have been very frustrated at not being able to connect to my home wireless network. It would connect to network but with no internet access. I tried many things then tried changing my DNS from obtain automatically to 202.67.220.220 worked. Thanks

I had my Winsock reset, but it didn't help me. Could you have a look into my situation as well? My post is: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/5d307846-16da-4a50-9c43-6ed455836f6e/ Thanks, -Oleg.
