Windows 7 64 bit - Backup not working
I was running Windows 7 32 bit from my C: partition on my laptop drive (clean install). I've set up 'Backup and restore' to create backups on my H: partition (roughly 158 GB in size). Now I am running Windows 7 64 bit (also a clean install) from an SSD drive (I've mounted the other drive through a eSATA port) Here I've also set up 'Backup and restore' to create backups on that same partition of my original drive. I'm guessing this causes a problem, since I can't 'Manage space', I can't 'Change settings' (like create a schedule for backups), I've allready formatted the partition I want to make my backups on, but that did not seem to help... I also tried importing a registry key to reset my 'Backup and Restore' below are the contents: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup] "ValidConfig"=- [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup\ScheduleParams] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup\Security] [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsBackup\Status] That worked as far as the reset goes, but now I see a 'Set up backup..." button which doesn't do anything. It briefly tries to open something (I see some sort of icon appearing and closing on the taskbar) but it doesn't work. Please help. PS I don't know if it's related, but the same thing happens (icon appearing and closing) when I try to start Internet Explorer in Private mode from the Start Menu so I'm beginning to think there are other problems...

Hi, Since the backup feature didn't work anymore after importing the registry, let's first perform a System Restore to any earlier point. If the issue persists, let's try the Clean Boot to check the result. If any error is received, please let me know what exactly it is. Hi Niki, Thanks for your reply. Sadly I can't use System Restore, since I haven't made a restore point yet in Windows 7 64 bit. Restoring a 32 bit Restore point wouldn't be smart. It's not even possible, since I formatted the drive with the restore points on them. I only have 1 Restore Point available, which was made this afternoon when installing a program (but backup and restore wasn't working then). I tried a clean boot, but I still can't start anything. Let me walk through the buttons to illustrate which work (only a few): Back up now -> quick flash of an icon in taskbar Manage space -> same thing Change settings (schedule) -> same thing Restore my files -> opens an dialog with nothing to restore Restore all users' files -> quick flash of an icon in taskbar Select another backup to restore files from -> again, the icon Last but not least, the 'quick opening and closing icon' also appears when trying to start Internet Explorer in Private Mode (When you have Internet Explorer in the Start Menu, you can open a context menu to open IE in Private Mode). I'm starting to think this problem is not only a 'Backup and Restore' issue... PS I tried uninstalling Internet Explorer and installing it again, but now the context menu in the start menu from which I could click 'Start InPrivate' and 'Open a new tab' is gone.

Since this is a more general problem than just for backup and restore (at least I guess), I created a more general question: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproappcompat/thread/3a44b7ce-48d7-4c3f-b670-5c92281e3935
