Windows 7 64bit: IE9 Only the address bar/search field allows input
When I run IE9, it looks OK but any page that allows/requires user input, the input fields cannot be written to. Anything I type appears in the address/search box because that's the ONLY writable field on the page. IE9 Works fine on a Server 2008 R2 test system (enhanced security turned off) and it works fine on a Windows 7 32 bit test virtual machine with only Office 2010 installed. But, on this 'realistic' real test machine with a boat-load of software installed; IE9 is useless. I HAVE tried EVERY different solution I have found in the forums but NOTHING helps. I am about to open a direct support incident because I'm DESPERATE!Jim Kay

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. I assume you have tried resetting IE settings and the issue persists in clean boot. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 What I want to ask is any update installed before the issue occurs? If so, please restore those updates. Meanwhile, your display card driver software may have conflict. Please reinstall the driver to test and then update to the latest version. It fails immediately after being installed and continues to fail even if removed and reinstalled. If I bring up a nice new virtual machine with Windows 7 and install IE9, it works. So my display card is not the problem. I realize that IE9 works for lots of people but on my desktop 'real world' system, it does not work. I have no idea where to look for the reason.Jim Kay

All that stuff was installed and working long before the upgrade to IE9. Foxpro continues to work as does Rockmelt (a Google Chrome derivative from the makers of Netscape.) There has to be a reason but I don't know where to look. I have also disabled ALL of the add-ons to IE but that doesn't help. Neither does setting all the Internet Options to 'default' help. Jim Kay

Did this update install before IE9? Uninstall IE9, reboot, run this KB update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2454826, then reinstall IE9. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home

Uninstall IE9, reboot, run this KB update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2454826, then reinstall IE9. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/products/ie/home I spent two hours with support (1157188045) and only discovered that running the IE without any add-ons does work. However, disabling all visible add-ons does not work. The support engineer gave up and escalated the case. It's the case of the invisible add-on. Jim Kay

You could use msconfig to disable non-Microsoft services and rule out a third party app as the inivisble problem. After installing the OS, did you launch IE8 to clear the run once and set the preferences prior to installing IE9? That's one reason I suggested an uninstall\reinstall of IE9. Sure is a strange deal. Are there any other issues apparent? Could it be a corrupted installation disk?

This is Windows and I have about 75 apps installed. There are ALWAYS issues. Software conflicts are a way-of-life in the Win-Tel environment. I ran Windows 7 with IE8 for almost one year before upgrading to IE9. The code for IE9 was delivered by Windows Update and I even tried purging all of the update files and starting over. But the problem persists. After I removed IE9 the first time, I used IE8 again for a month or so and then let it upgrade again. Same problem. I have all the same add-ons with IE8 and it's fine. Upgrade to IE9 and it won't work. Personally, I think IE9 should run if IE8 was running. And this is a particularly strange way for a browser to fail. It also seems that IE9 no longer has an option to display the page source so I can't even look at that any more. With all the stuff I have installed here, just how much time am I going to spend trying to make IE9 work? I think I'll let Product support figure this one out. Jim Kay

Hi Jim, According to your description, it seems that you have created an incidence with Microsoft support and the case is still on-going. As you have indentified the root cause if one of the invisible add-on, we may need to find which add-on caused the problem. Then go to the (add on)product manufacture and check if they have any update on IE9. To find the add-on, we may need to go through troubleshooting steps by disabling half and test. Then goes on and on. Regards,Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. But the tech and I both agree that this is not a solution. It's only an indication of the source of the problem. It does not seem related to add-ons despite the fact that the 'run with not add-ons' does work. Jim Kay

Since IE9 relies on GPU operations for some of its rendering, I'm wondering... Have you checked for any display driver updates? Specifically, visit the web page of the maker of your video card (e.g., nVidia.com, ATI.com, Intel.com) and locate the driver package that matches your hardware and version of Windows. Display driver updates solve many problems. -Noel

Well it was worth a look. I just re-scanned the thread and didn't notice whether you'd said which version of the OS you're running. If it's Windows 7 x64, do you see the same results with the 64 bit IE9 as the 32 bit one? -Noel
