Windows 7 Beta Build 7000 Windows Explorer does not automatically display my home network drive
I have a home network with a router, desktop computer, printer, NAS drive, and a Laptop. The laptop runs Windows 7, the desktop Vista Home premium. The Laptop connects via wireless, the rest is connected by cable. Linksys Router 310NIn Windows7, under Network, Windows Explorer shows the Desktop, Printer, Laptop, and the router but does not show the NAS drive. The NAS is named Maxtor_Net_500. If I type \\Maxtor_Net_500 in the address bar the drive shows up and I can access the folders/files.Programs such as Syncback can read/write to the drive as well. Each time I open Windows Explorer I have to go to the address bar and use the drop down box to select//maxtor_net_500/in order to view the drive. Why does Windows 7 Windows Explorer not show the drive?(The Vista machine does not have this issue)Thanks for any advice you can give.Bill.

It would appear that your NAS is not properly announcing itself as being in the same network as your Windows 7 computer. For starters you could verify that your network settings for your NAS match those for Windows 7, is your NAS a member of the same workgroup as your Windows 7 computer? What OS is your NAS running? Is it a linux based OS running Samba for network sharing?

Bill - Is the Vista box using this as a mapped drive ? If so, did you place a checkmark next to 'Reconnect at logon' Even if you didn't, have you tried that with the Win7 box ? This might no the way you "want" to do it, but I'm curious to know if this works.

Ken & Jim,Thanks for the replies. The drive is not a mapped drive though I do have portions of it mapped to allow certain programs to access that particular directory/folder. It isconfigured forthe same "Workgroup"The problem turned out to be very simple. I had been using Kaspersky WKS for my security with Windows 7 but it has an issue with BSOD while accessing network drives (known issue). I change to ESET 4 Security and the fire wall was running in the "srtict protection" mode which was making the drive in explorer ... even though I could access the drive by typing in the address. I changed this setting to "allow sharing" and the drive now shows up in explorer without having to manually type in the address. This puzzles mebut it has done the trick. When I have more time I'll try to repeat this.Again, thanks for taking the time to offer solutions.Bill.
