Windows 7 Logon Problem
Logging on a Windows 7 machine. This machine is sitting on the docking station and connected to the network using LAN. The whole issue starts when I take off my Laptop from the docking station and close its lid. I bring the Laptop out of docking station and then try to log on - It will not accept my password and it wont allow me to log on. I have to change the credentials to log into another account by clicking on switch credentials - then log off. Once on the main Windows 7 Screen - I log back on with the old credentials(Originial Account) and it does log on like this. Now, the question is why do I have to log on to a different account and then log off to go back on my own existing account. Noticed one workaround but I hope this is not how MICROSOFT plan Windows 7 : Used the on-screen keyboard and GUESS what - it works. On the left hand side "Ease of access button" > click on > Type without Keyboard(On-Screen Keyboard) > Tried typing in the password > Works good. So for sure nothing is wrong with Password. As far as it goes with the Laptop - I added a USB keyboard - It still does not accept the password. The only way around this is to go through by using (On-Screen Keyboard). Note : I have made sure that the standard Keyboard in English(UK) so it makes no differences in my case. There is only one language keyboard in regional settings. What can be the possible cause for this ??

Hi ManiBabbar, Please remove the docking station and then perform the following tests: 1. Close the lid and then open the lid to log on the user account. 2. Go to Start, click Sleep, and then wake the computer to log on the user account. What is the result? If the issue persists in the above two tests, please check if the Number Lock key is enabled after the sleep. If this is the situation, you can refer to the suggestions in this article to see if the issue can be resolved: How to activate the NumLock key when Windows starts Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information. If the issue still exists, please create a new user account to test the result. If the issue does not occur in the new user account, please see: Fix a corrupted user profile Hope this helps. Thanks Linda for the reply. Here is the de-brief once more after the following steps. 1. Closing the Lid and then logging back into the user account works fine. <Condition is > If I restart the machine without the docking station each time in the morning, it does not take the input from the keyboard - where as if I add it from on-screen keyboard it accepts. 2. Putting the machine to Sleep and waking it up > Does not persist - It is not the case, it works fine again. As per the above tests, it seems that it is not persistent in the above situations. Still looking at the Key entry of the registry - The Reg_SZ key value is 2147483648 instead of 2 or 0. So I doubt but still going ahead - I changed it to 2 to activate the Numlock. Restarted the PC to observe the difference but it did not make difference. Creating a New user account to test the results : No difference, it does the same - If I use the on-screen keyboard, it allows me to get in straight away. Any further help would be highly appreciated. These are the machines on the domain, and we are in testing phase of deployment with pilot testing, we have encountered these results randomly on more than 3 occassions out of 10 machines. I have also checked the HID service, as one of the articles mentioned that it could be HID service causing the problem - that was also not the case. Regards, Mani

OK, went throught it again and have better description of the problem. ( or maybe its just getting worse....) My computer hooked to tv via cable, also have usb mouse attached. worked fine for 1 hr, then keyboard started messing up. num lock light on and could not get it to turn off. so I disconnected mouse, and keyboard immediately begins functioning again- and now able to turn off numbers lock. But! 15 min later, started having keyboard issues, many keys unresponsive, but slightly different from before as the numbers lock light was NOT on. Disconnected cable to TV and keyboard again responsive. so now OK, except the logon issues i described earlier. I put the computer to sleep and opend up and it will not accept my logon password, the logon screen has my name, and also says locked. I clik to logon as another used, now the logon screen says logged on and accepts my password. so what is the deal- does this mean i cannot hook ny computer to tv, and i cannot use a usb mouse without my keyboard going haywire? I need a fix for this fast! Please... thanks, Valerie

I actually had a similar problem with my laptop and it was related to numlock After every poweron or resume (as long as the keyboard was connected) it would turn numlock on, effectively making my keyboard type numbers on half the letters. Rather annoying. I'm using a microsoft keyboard (laser desktop 5000) and the intellitype software. I'm guessing its somewhere in that program that is the main cause of this.

thanks paintball, Did you solve the problem by getting another keyboard? I was using a logitch EX110 keyboard and mouse, and had the exact same issue you described. what confused me is that after i disconnected the keyboard and mouse it was fine for a while, about 30 minutes or so, but started getting unresponsive keys again (although no numbers lock this time) until i disconnected the cable to the tv.

Valerie, To change the default values for your Keyboard numlock so that each time you restart it - it does not switches off the num lock key follow these settings. http://tutorial.downloadatoz.com/how-to-activate-the-numlock-key-when-windows-starts.html Atleast, in my case it was not the similar problem as yours. Problem seems to have been resolved by noticing that the default language settings the Laptop picks up are US. Although while installation it has been set to UK and also within the OS it is set to UK. Not sure why it defaults to US while on the login screen. As per the layout if I select the UK keyboard settings it does allow me to login and seems to be the regional settings that is causing the problem making it default problem rather than Keyboard or anything else."Do it yourself, before you think someone else will" - Mani Babbar - 18.08.10

It was quite strange, Plugging in the keyboard would cause the numlock to turn on, (seemed to detect the separate num pad) but unplugging it wouldn't turn it off. I just ended up not plugging in the keyboard until I logged in. Your second problem sounds different. The video out shouldn't be connected in anyway to the keyboard. Maybe a driver update would deal with yours. I never did check for numlock when starting options because it was different depending on the keyboard I had installed. Maybe there is something in your Logitech software?
